Test H: Panic Feature Inoperative

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Enter Central Security Module (CSM) FUNCTION TEST and monitor TRANSMITTER TIC/DATA. Using keyless entry remote transmitter(s), press and release PANIC button. NGS tester should display PANIC. If tester display is as specified and parking lights do not operate properly, go to next step. If tester display is as specified and horn does not sound, go to step  6. If tester display is not as specified, program keyless entry remote transmitter(s), and retest system. If tester display still does not display as specified, replace keyless entry remote transmitter(s).
  2. Using NGS tester, command parking lights ON and OFF. If parking lights do not illuminate, go to next step. If parking lights do illuminate, go to step  10.
  3. Using headlight switch, turn parking lights ON. If parking lights illuminate, turn parking lights OFF and go to next step. If parking lights do not illuminate, diagnose and repair parking light system. See EXTERIOR LIGHTS .
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect CSM harness connector C257. Connect negative battery cable. Measure voltage between ground and CSM harness connector C257 terminal No. 1 (Tan/White wire). See Figure. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Tan/White wire between CSM and battery junction box. Battery junction box is located in left side of engine compartment. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  5. Using a fused jumper wire (20-amp), connect terminal No. 1 (Tan/White wire) and terminal No. 2 (Brown wire) at CSM harness connector C257. See Figure. If parking lights illuminate, go to step  10. If parking lights do not illuminate, repair open in Brown wire between CSM and parking lights. See EXTERIOR LIGHTS in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
  6. Press horn pad on steering wheel. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, diagnose and repair horn system. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - EXPEDITION & NAVIGATOR article.
  7. Using NGS tester, command horn ON and OFF. If horn does not sound when commanded ON, go to next step. If horn does sound when commanded ON, go to step  10.
  8. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect CSM harness connector C256. CSM is located behind left side of instrument panel. Connect negative battery cable. Measure voltage between ground and CSM harness connector C256 terminal No. 24 (Yellow/Light Blue wire). See Figure. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Yellow/Light Blue wire between CSM and battery junction box. Battery junction box is located in left side of engine compartment. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  9. Using a fused jumper wire (20-amp), connect terminals No. 24 (Yellow/Light Blue wire) and No. 13 (Yellow/Light Green wire) at CSM harness connector C256. See Figure. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, repair open in Yellow/Light Green wire between CSM and horn. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  10. Disconnect all CSM harness connectors. Inspect harness connectors for corrosion and pushed out pins. Connect all CSM harness connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if problem is still exists. If problem is still exists, replace CSM. See CENTRAL SECURITY MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If problem does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Clear DTCs and perform CSM self-test.
