Steering Column: Disassembly

- Remove the steering column. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN .
- Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to STEERING WHEEL .
- Remove the clockspring. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
- Remove the bearing retainer.
- Rotate 90 degrees counterclockwise and remove the steering column lock housing bearing.
- Note the position of the key hole and remove the steering column lock gear.
- Remove the spring and the sensor ring.
- Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring from the steering column shaft.
- Remove and discard the gearshift lever pin and then remove the gearshift lever.
- Remove the two lock cylinder housing pivot screws.
- Remove the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft from the steering actuator housing.
- Pry up the steering column locking levers using a shop fabricated tool.
- On tilt steering columns, remove the steering column position spring.
- Remove the turn indicator cancel cam.
- Remove the snap ring.
- Remove the steering column upper bearing spring.
- Remove the steering column bearing sleeve.
- Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
- Slide the steering column shaft in toward the steering column lock cylinder housing, then out.
- Slide the steering column bearing tolerance ring off the steering column shaft.
- Using a suitable punch, remove the upper steering column bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.
- Use a suitable punch to remove the lower steering column bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.
- Remove the screws and the parking brake release switch.
- Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid.
- Remove the three bolts.
- Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid.
- Remove the shift tube.
- Remove the four bolts.
- Remove the two shift tube clamps.
- Remove the shift tube.
- Remove the transmission selector lever arm and support.
- Remove the two bolts.
- Remove the transmission selector lever arm and support.
- Remove the gearshift selector tube spring.
- Drive out the gearshift lever pin from the shift tube.
- Remove the gearshift lever.
- Remove the column shift selector lever plunger.
- If it is bent, install a new column shift selector lever plunger.
- Remove the two gearshift lever socket bushings and the transmission control selector lever spring clip.
- Remove the steering column lock pawl.
- Drive out the steering column lock lever pin.
- Remove the steering column lock pawl.
- Remove the ignition switch.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the ignition switch.
- Remove the lower steering column bearing and sleeve.
- Remove the screws and the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Remove the upper steering column lock actuator and the lower steering column lock lever actuator.

Carefully note the position of the steering column lock gear, bearing and retainer prior to removal.
