Inspection and Verification: Notes
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Lincoln Town Car. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Verify the customer concern.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.VISUAL INSPECTION CHART
Mechanical Electrical - Front seat tracks obstructed.
- Seat at limit(s) of travel.
- Open central junction box (CJB) fuses F2.19 (10A), F2.9 (7.5A) or F2.31 (10A).
- Open battery junction box (BJB) circuit breaker CB1.601 (20A), fuses F1.1 (20A), F1.117 (30A), F1.118 (20A), F1.13 (20A), F1.15 (15A), F1.16 (20A), F1.2 (25A) or F1.8 (20A).
- Loose, corroded or damaged connectors. Disconnect and inspect all underseat connectors. Reconnect and check for normal operation.
- Damaged switches.
- Damaged motors.
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
If a concern is noted for power seat horizontal movement of a memory seat system, determine if the power seat track operates correctly by carrying out the following steps:
- Disconnect DSM C341b and driver seat motor C353.
- Connect a fused jumper lead between DSM C341b pin 1, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and driver seat motor C353 pin 1, circuit 981 (RD/WH), harness side.
- Connect a second fused jumper lead between DSM C341b pin 2, circuit 490 (RD), harness side and driver seat motor C353 pin 4, circuit 980 (YE/WH), harness side, moving the front seat to its full rearward position. Once the seat reaches its full rearward position, remove the fused jumper leads.
- Time how long it takes the seat to make full travel by connecting a fused jumper lead between DSM C341b pin 1, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and driver seat motor C353 pin 4, circuit 980 (YE/WH), harness side.
- Connect a second fused jumper lead between DSM C341b pin 2, circuit 490 (RD), harness side and driver seat motor C353 pin 1, circuit 981 (RD/WH), harness side, moving the front seat to its full forward position and record the time. Once the seat reaches its full forward position, remove the fused jumper leads.
- If the travel time is greater than 35 seconds, install a new power seat track. If the travel time is less than 35 seconds, the power seat track operation is acceptable. Reconnect the power seat system and continue with the diagnostic procedure.
NOTE: If a seat track motor is inoperative or the front seat track motor and transmission assemble is identified as the source or a noise, install a new front seat track motor and transmission assembly. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT TRACK MOTOR . - If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
- Check that the program card is correctly installed.
- Check the connections to the vehicle.
- Check the ignition switch position.
- If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
- Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
- ISO circuit fault (circuit 914 or 915); all electronic control units no response/not equipped, Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
- No response/not equipped for the driver seat module (DSM), Refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES .
- No response/not equipped for the driver door module (DDM), Refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES .
- System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the DDM and DSM (if equipped).
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX to continue diagnosis. For DDM or DSM DTCs not listed in the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index, Refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES to continue diagnosis.
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to SYMPTOM CHART to continue diagnosis.
