Removal and Installation
CAUTION:
Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM
.
- Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
- Remove the intermediate shaft slider bolt.
- To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
- Remove and discard the steering column-to-intermediate shaft bolt.
- To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
- Remove and discard the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
- To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
- Remove and discard the 2 intermediate shaft bearing plate nuts and the plate.
- To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- Remove the intermediate shaft.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
NOTE:
Install a new steering column-to-intermediate shaft bolt.
NOTE:
Install a new intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
NOTE:
Install 2 new intermediate shaft bearing plate nuts.
