Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Throttle body
    • Stoplamp switch
    • Front bumper cover (adaptive cruise control only)
    • Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse(s):
      • 59 (10A)
      • 79 (5A) (adaptive cruise control)
      • 91 (10A) (adaptive cruise control)
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Cruise control switch(es) (part of the message center switch)
    • Cruise control deactivator switch (integral to the stoplamp switch)
    • Stoplamp switch
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. Inspect for a damaged Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) bracket, bumper beam or front bumper cover. Repair all damaged components first. After the damage is repaired, carry out the vertical alignment procedure. Refer to CRUISE CONTROL MODULE (C-CM) (WITH SENSOR) ADJUSTMENT  in this service information. If the C-CM bracket is damaged, replace the bracket. Refer to CRUISE-CONTROL MODULE (C-CM)  in this service information.
  5. Verify the speedometer operates correctly without cruise control by test driving the vehicle. If the speedometer does not operate correctly, refer to INSTRUMENTATION, MESSAGE CENTER, AND WARNING CHIMES .
  6. Verify the stoplamps operate correctly with the ignition switch in the ON position. If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, refer to EXTERIOR LIGHTING .
  7. NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
  8. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
  9. NOTE: The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms voltage and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
  10. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
    • Check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
    • Check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
    • Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK , No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no power to the scan tool.
  11. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • Verify the ignition is ON.
    • The air bag warning indicator prove-out confirms ignition ON (other indicators may NOT prove ignition is ON) confirms ignition ON. If ignition does not turn ON, refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES to diagnose no power in RUN.
    • Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
    • Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK , Inspection and Verification to establish a scan tool session.
  12. NOTE: The ignition must be OFF to carry out the RFA module self-test.
  13. Carry out the self-test diagnostics for the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module, C-CM, Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) and PCM.
  14. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to DTC CHARTS . For all other DTCs, refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES .
  15. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to SYMPTOM CHART .
