VEHICLES AFFECTED
1996 626/MX with a FS engine and LA4A-EL automatic transaxle.
DESCRIPTION
The MIL may illuminate while driving with DTC P0421 stored in the PCM memory. Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected for this and other DTC(s). If no other DTC(s) are present, the vehicle's PCM should be reprogrammed according to this bulletin. DO NOT replace the catalytic converter or monitor the O2 sensors until after the PCM reprogramming repair has been performed.
REPROGRAMMING SETUP PROCEDURE
- Remove front console trim and disconnect connector to access PCM.
- Connect NGS tester to the Bench Reprogramming Kit 49G0-88-004.
- Connect the 3 pronged plug from the External Power Supply 49G0-88-004 to a standard AC outlet.
- Connect the connector cable from the External Power Supply to the NGS tester power connector.
- Connect the 104-pin Bench Reprogramming cable 49G0-88-002 to the NGS Diagnostic Link and VPWR jacks.
- Connect the 104-pin connector from the 104 pin Bench Reprogramming cable 49G0-88-002 to the PCM.
- Insert the PC card 49G0-88-003.
REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE
- Select PCM Reprogramming on the NGS tester and press Trigger.
- Follow the prompts on the NGS tester to reprogram the PCM.
- After reprogramming, connect the PCM and install front console. Refer to section S of the workshop manual.
- Erase DTCs loaded to PCM memory during automatic KOEO Self Test.
- Verify repair.
- List the date, dealer number and service bulletin number on the Authorization Label and install the label on the radiator support.
DETAILED REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURES
- Select PCM Reprogramming on the NGS tester and press Trigger.
- Enter the last eight digits of the VIN.
- Scroll to the correct digit and press Trigger.
- When all digits are entered, press the #3 button.NOTE: To move ahead one digit press button #7 (Right Arrow Key), move behind one digit #4 (Left Arrow Key), to erase press #8 (Clear).
- Select the proper calibration for the vehicle.
- 1996 Federal Automatic
- 1996 California Automatic
- Press Trigger, cycle key switch toggle on Bench cable 49G0-88-002 OFF then ON, press Trigger.
- View all DTCs.
- If P1000 is the only DTC displayed, go the step 6.
- If other DTCs are displayed, record the information and go to step 6. Refer to the workshop manual for applicable DTC information.
- Press Trigger.
- Cycle key switch toggle on the Bench cable 49G88-002 OF then ON.NOTE: DO NOT press Trigger. The NGS tester will automatically begin initialization. After initialization, the NGS screen will display one of three messages. If the correct calibration was entered, the screen will initially display "Verifying Calibration." If successful, the following message will appear: READY TO BEGIN REPROGRAMMING, LEAVE IGNITION ON, DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE
- Press Trigger to begin calibration.
- During calibration, the screen will display the status of completed calibration (0 - 100%).NOTE: If the message below appears, you may have entered the wrong VIN or calibration. If this occurs, press cancel and check that the VIN and calibration are correct. THE SOFTWARE CURRENTLY IN THE PCM CAN NOT BE IDENTIFIED, CALL SUPPORT CENTER (TECHNICAL HOT LINE) FOR INFORMATION.CAUTION: If you accidently press the Trigger prior to entering the correct VIN or calibration, the PCM will be reprogrammed with the wrong calibration.
- If the correct calibration was entered, the screen will display the following message. The vehicle currently contains this calibration.
- During calibration, the screen will display the status of completed calibration (0 - 100%).
- Press Cancel to exit this program.NOTE: After reprogramming, the following message will appear. PCM HAS BEEN REPROGRAMMED, AN AUTHORIZATION LABEL MUST BE COMPLETEDNOTE: After successful reprogramming, the message will also include one of two part numbers: * F62F-AG (Calibration for Federal vehicles) * F62F-BG (Calibration for California vehicles)
- Cycle key switch toggle on the Bench cable 49G0-88-002 OFF then ON.
- Press Trigger.NOTE: KOEO Self Test is automatically performed. After Self Test is complete 16 DTCs will be displayed. These DTCs occur because the Self Test was performed off vehicle.
- Connect the PCM and install front console. Refer to section S of the workshop manual.
- Erase DTCs loaded to PCM memory during KOEO Self Test.
- Verify repair.
- List the date, dealer number and service bulletin number on the Authorization Label and install the label on the radiator support.
