DESCRIPTION

When attempting to reprogram a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for the stalling concern noted in Recall #73801, you may receive an error message indicating that the reprogramming procedure cannot be completed. This may just indicate that the PCM has already been updated with the newer calibration from Service Bulletin K-008/98. This bulletin is for repairing a 1-2 shift shock complaint or updating the PCM after a remanufactured transmission with updated servo components has been installed. The calibration from this Service Bulletin already contains the calibration update for Recall #73801. Follow the repair procedure listed below to determine if the updated calibration from Service Bulletin K-008/98 has been installed.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.

NOTE: Newer calibrations build on the previous calibrations; the PCM will not accept a calibration older than the one currently installed.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Check the vehicle repair history for the following:
    • A claim with a Part Number Main Cause FW50-21-3M B indicating that the shift shock repair has been completed .
    • A claim for a transmission replacement after August 1998, which would require the newer calibration due to the updated servo components.

If in doubt, install the applicable reprogramming card 49G0-88-014 (Fed) or 49G0-88-015 (CA) in the NGS tester and initiate reprogramming.

    • If NGS displays "Vehicle Currently Contains This Calibration" the PCM already has the updated calibration for both Recall #73801 and the 1-2 shift shock concern. No further repair is necessary.
    • If the NGS still indicates a fault in the PCM, the PCM may need to be replaced. Contact the Technical Assistance Hotline for authorization or further troubleshooting if necessary.
  2. Clear any codes stored during reprogramming if necessary.
  3. Apply the authorized modification decal indicating that Recall #73801 has been performed and update the vehicle warranty history.
  4. Verify repair.
