TEST 3: MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL)

TEST 3 MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL)
STEP  INSPECTION  ACTION 
1 CHECK FOR A NO START CONDITION
NOTE: If vehicle will not start.

See TEST 3: MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL)  .
  • Is Malfunction Indicator Lamp always on? 
 Yes Go to step 2.
No Go to step 3.
2 MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ALWAYS ON: CHECK MIL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • If any Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO) or Continuous Memory DTCs are present, repair before proceeding.

    See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE NUMBERS .

  • Disconnect PCM.
  • Install Breakout Box.
  • Measure resistance between test pin 2 (MIL) and test pins 51 or 103 (PWR GND) at the Breakout Box.
  • Is resistance less than 5.0 ohms? 
 Yes Repair short circuit between test pin 2 and Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
Rerun Quick Test.

No Replace PCM. See COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS .

3 MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) NEVER ON
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure voltage from battery negative post to ground side of fuse 11 in the I/P fuse panel.
  • Key OFF.
  • Was voltage greater than 10.5 volts? 
 Yes Go to step 5.
No Go to step 4.
4 CHECK FOR B+ AT FUSE
  • Key ON.
  • Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure voltage from battery negative post to B+ side of fuse.
  • Key OFF.
  • Was voltage greater than 10.5 volts? 
 Yes Replace the fuse.
Verify repair by turning the ignition key to the ON position.
No Measure voltage from battery negative post to B+ side of fuse 11 in the I/P fuse panel. Repair open B+ circuit.
5 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE ON THE MIL B+ CIRCUIT
  • Disconnect 12-pin instrument cluster connector C-215.
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure voltage between pin 9 (P/LG) of instrument cluster connector C-215 and battery negative post.
  • Key OFF.
  • Was voltage greater than 10.5 volts? 
 Yes Go to step 6.
No Repair open circuit.
Verify repair by turning key to ON position.
6 CHECK MIL CIRCUIT RESISTANCE
  • Disconnect PCM.
  • Install Breakout Box.
  • Measure resistance between test pin 2 (MIL) at the Breakout Box and pin 9 (P/LG) of instrument cluster connector C-215.
  • Is resistance less than 5.0 ohms? 
 Yes See INSTRUMENT PANELS .
Verify repair by turning key to ON position.
No Repair open in the MIL circuit.
Verify repair by turning key to ON position.
