Test 4: Set Speed Can Not Be Canceled
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission go to step 7 . If vehicle is equipped with manual transmission, go to next step.
- Operate vehicle and cruise control system. Attempt to cancel cruise control operation by depressing clutch pedal. If operation cancels when clutch pedal is depressed, go to step 11 . If cruise control operation does not cancel by clutch pedal operation, go to next step.
- Check clutch pedal height and free play to ensure switch is activated. If switch is activated, go to next step. If switch is not activated, adjust pedal height as necessary, then retest cruise control system.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect cruise control actuator connector. Using DVOM, check continuity between cruise control actuator harness terminal "I" (Orange wire) and ground while depressing clutch switch. If continuity exists, replace cruise control actuator. See ACTUATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest cruise control system. If continuity does not exist, go to next step.
- Check continuity between clutch position switch terminal "E" (Black/Yellow wire) and ground while depressing clutch switch. If continuity is present, repair wiring between clutch switch and cruise control actuator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest cruise control system. If continuity is not present, go to next step.
- Disconnect clutch position switch connector. Inspect continuity between clutch position switch harness terminal "C" (Orange wire) and ground. If continuity exists, replace clutch position switch and then retest cruise control system. If continuity does not exist, repair wiring between clutch position switch and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest cruise control system
- Operate vehicle with cruise control system engaged. Attempt to cancel cruise control operation by shifting transmission to Neutral. If cruise control operation is deactivated, go to step 11 . If cruise control does not deactivate, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect cruise control actuator harness. Shift transmission to Neutral. Check continuity between cruise control actuator terminal "I" (Green wire) and ground. If continuity exists, replace cruise control actuator. See ACTUATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest cruise control system. If continuity does not exist, go to next step.
- Disconnect Transmission Range (TR) switch. On 4-cylinder models, check continuity between TR switch terminal No. 9 (Green wire) and ground. On 6-cylinder models, check continuity between TR switch terminal "H" (Green wire) and ground. If continuity exists, repair wiring between TR switch and cruise control actuator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If continuity does not exist, go to next step.
- On 4-cylinder models, check continuity between TR switch terminal No. 4 (Black/Blue wire) and ground. On 6-cylinder models, check continuity between TR switch terminal "B" (Black/Blue wire) and ground. If continuity is present, test TR switch. See TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If continuity does not exist, check wiring between starter and TR switch. See STARTERS article in STARTERS & GENERATORS.
- Operate vehicle with cruise control engaged. Attempt to disengage cruise control by turning cruise control off. If cruise control disengages, there is no problem at this time. If cruise control does not disengage, go to next step.
- Test cruise control switch. See CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace cruise control switch if faulty. See CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest cruise control system. If cruise control switch is okay, then replace cruise control actuator. See ACTUATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest cruise control system.
