Transaxle Disassembly

CAUTION: Do not use an impact wrench or remove manual shaft without holding manual shaft lever as transaxle may be damaged.
  1. Mount transaxle on stand. Remove torque converter. Immediately turn torque converter so hole is facing upward. This will help keep remaining fluid from spilling. Remove dipstick tube and breather hose. Remove input/turbine speed sensor. Hold manual shaft lever and remove shaft nut and washer. Remove TR switch. Remove VSS. Remove connector pipe.
  2. Remove oil pan. Inspect pan and magnet for material. If large amounts of material are found, replace torque converter. Check for drive plate and brake band wear. Check for bearing, gear and driven plate wear. Check for aluminum wear. Disconnect all harness connectors on valve body. Remove oil strainer (filter). Remove valve body bolts. See Fig 1 . Lift valve body upward and remove head of manual valve from parking assist lever. Remove control valve body.
  3. Remove internal transaxle harness. Remove accumulators and springs. See Fig 2 . Using hammer and pin punch, drive out roll pin from manual shaft. Remove manual shaft. Remove parking rod lever assembly. Remove band servo cover and servo.
  4. Remove oil pump. Mount opposing slide hammers on pump housing to assist removal. Remove converter housing from transaxle case. Remove forward clutch assembly. See Fig 3 . Remove differential. Remove secondary gear and output gear. Remove actuator plate and support actuator.
  5. Pull out parking pawl shaft and remove parking pawl with spring. Remove end cover and "O" rings from transaxle case. Remove 2-4 band strut. Remove 2-4 brake band. Secure band with wire. Remove 2-4 clutch drum. See Fig 3 . Remove snap ring and rear planetary gear.
  6. Drive out front sun gear from front side of transaxle case. Remove forward clutch hub. Remove front planetary gear. Remove front internal gear and one-way clutch. Unstake lock nut. Drive out primary gear. Remove lock nut.
  7. Remove bearing and spacer. See Fig 2 . Remove primary gear bearing race (if necessary). Remove remaining bearing races (if necessary). Remove oil pipe.
