GF4A-EL Transmission

  1. Connect NGS tester to DLC. Turn ignition on. Select PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD function, then press TRIGGER. Select TR PID and then press START. Move gear selector through entire range while observing NGS display. See TESTING TR SWITCH POSITIONS  table. If operation is not as specified, check switch continuity. Go to step  3 . If operation is as specified, go to next step.

  2. Select TR V PID, then press start. Monitor displayed voltage while moving gear selector through entire range. With shift lever in Drive, 2, 1 and R, voltage should be 3.5 volts. In Park and Neutral, there should be no voltage. If voltage is not as specified, check switch continuity. Go to step  3 . If voltages are as specified, TR switch is okay and testing is completed.
  3. Disconnect TR switch harness connector. Check continuity between TR switch terminals with gear selector in appropriate position. See TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH RESISTANCE (GF4A-EL)  table. See Fig 1 . If continuity is not as specified, replace TR switch. See SERVICING - A/T article under TRANSMISSIONS.
