Diagnostic Procedure
- If FREEZE FRAME DATA has been recorded, go to next step. If FREEZE FRAME DATA has not been recorded, record FREEZE FRAME DATA. Go to next step.
- Verify Related Repair Information Availability - Check for related Service Bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability. If any related repair information is available, perform repair or diagnosis according to available repair information. If vehicle is not repaired, go to next step. If related repair information is not available, go to next step.
- Inspect Left Side OCV For Malfunction - Start engine. Increase engine speed. Stop engine. Remove left side OCV. Refer to OIL CONTROL VALVE under VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article. Inspect position of spool valve in left side OCV. If spool valve is located at valve retard position, go to next step. If spool valve is not located in the retard position, replace left side OCV. After repair, go to step 6.
- Inspect Left Side Key Groove & Timing Mark - Remove left side cylinder head cover. Inspect key groove and timing mark. Refer to VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR under VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If key groove and timing mark are aligned correctly, go to next step. If key groove and timing mark are not aligned correctly, replace left side variable valve timing actuator. After repair, go to step 6.
- Inspect Rotor Position - Remove left side variable valve timing actuator. If rotor position is at maximum valve timing retard, variable valve timing mechanism is normal. DTC is detected by intermittent concern. Intermittent concern might be removed by cleaning mode of variable valve timing control function. Go to next step. If rotor position is not at maximum valve retard position, replace left side variable valve timing actuator. After repair, go to next step.
- Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0021 Is Completed - Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors. Clear DTC from PCM memory using WDS or equivalent. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Turn ignition off. Start engine and warm it up completely. If same DTC is not present, go to next step. If same DTC is present, replace PCM. For PCM removal and installation, see POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article. After repair, go to next step.
- Verify After Repair Procedure - Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If any DTCs are present, go to appropriate DTC inspection. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no DTCs are present, trouble shooting is complete.
