Removal Note
NOTE:
- If the transmission is to be removed for a period of time, support the engine with a safety stand and a wood block.
NOTE:
- When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they may experience slightly different upshifts either soft or firm and this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Place the selector lever in NEUTRAL position.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- If transmission disassembly is required; drain the transmission fluid. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OIL PAN (GASKET & OIL STRAINER) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
- Vehicles equipped with 4WD, remove the transfer case. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - TRANSFER CASE .

- On 2.3L engines, it may be necessary to gain access to the flexplate nuts through the wheel well.
- Mark the torque converter and the flexplate for proper alignment at reinstallation.
- Remove the four torque converter to flexplate nuts.
- Rotate the crankshaft/flexplate assembly for access to all the torque converter nuts.
- Disconnect the shift cable.
- Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever.
- Disconnect the shift cable from the bracket.
- Remove the transmission wiring harness.
- Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) connector.
- Disconnect the digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector.
- Disconnect the transmission connector.
- Remove the three-way catalytic converter; See THREE-WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.3L
for 2.3L engine, THREE-WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L
for 3.0L engine or THREE-WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 4.0L
for 4.0L engine.
Remove the rear engine cover plate.
- Care should be taken not to damage the cooler lines.
- Disconnect the transmission cooler lines; see AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION COOLER TUBES REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
