Diagnostic Procedures

  1. If QUICK TEST was not performed, go to QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If QUICK TEST was performed, go to next step.
  2. Check Voltage Between Sensor & SIG RTN -  Verify KS is properly installed and harness connector is connected. Complete COMPREHENSIVE COMPONENT MONITOR REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE  under MONITOR REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLES. With KOEO, access KS1 PID. If KS1 PID is less than 0.5 volt, turn ignition off. Go to next step. If KS1 PID is 0.5 volt or more, go to step  6 .
  3. Check KS Sensor Resistance -  Disconnect KS 2-pin harness connector. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure . Measure resistance between breakout box terminals No. 32 and 57. If resistance reading is 4.39-5.35 megohms, go to step  7 . If resistance reading is more than 5.35 megohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is less than 4.39 megohms, go to step  5 .
  4. Check For Open KS(+) Circuit -  Measure resistance of KS(+) circuit between breakout box terminal No. 57 and KS harness connector Dark Green/Violet wire (Yellow wire on 2.3L and 3.0L). See Fig 1 . If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, replace faulty KS. After repair, go to step  8 . If resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit in Dark Green/Violet wire (Yellow wire on 2.3L and 3.0L) between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 57 and KS harness connector. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  8 .

  5. Check KS(+) Circuit For Short To Ground In Harness -  Measure resistance of KS(+) circuit between breakout box terminal No. 57 and KS harness connector Dark Green/Violet wire (Yellow wire on 2.3L and 3.0L). See Fig 1 . Record resistance reading. Measure resistance of KS(-) circuit between breakout box terminal No. 32 and chassis ground. Record resistance reading. If resistance reading is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to ground. After repair, go to step  8 .
  6. Check KS Circuits For Short To Power In Harness -  Connect PCM to breakout box. With KOEO, measure voltage of KS(+) circuit between breakout box terminal No. 57 and battery negative terminal. If voltage reading is less than one volt, replace faulty PCM. After repair, go to step  8 . If voltage reading is one volt or more, repair short circuit in Dark Green/Violet wire (Yellow wire on 2.3L and 3.0L) between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 57 and KS harness connector. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  8 .
  7. Check PCM For Short To Ground -  Measure resistance between KS(+) and KS(-) circuits at KS harness connector. See Fig 1 . If resistance reading is more than 10,000 ohms, replace faulty KS. After repair, go to next step. If resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, replace faulty PCM. After repair, go to next step.
  8. Check For Correct PCM Operation -  Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector and inspect connector for corrosion and pushed-out pins. Reconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector and ensure connector is properly seated when connected. Operate system and verify problem is still present. If problem is still present, replace faulty PCM. After repair, go to next step. If problem is no longer present, go to next step.
  9. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTCs Completed -  Make sure all electrical connectors are reconnected. Clear DTCs from PCM memory using scan tool. Perform QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If the same DTC is present, replace faulty PCM. Repeat QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no DTCs are present, test is complete.
