EXHAUST SULFUR SMELL DESCRIPTION

19	EXHAUST SULPHUR SMELL NOTE: A slight sulphur smell may be normal. Catalysts with less than 5,000 to 10,000 miles (new vehicle or replaced catalyst) are likely to have a sulphur smell due to highly active state of new catalysts. Replacing the catalyst can actually make the symptom worse.

EXHAUST SULFUR SMELL INSPECTION/ACTION CHART

STEP	INSPECTION		ACTION
1	CHECK FOR ANY DRIVEABILITY OR EXHAUST SMOKE SYMPTOMS Are any driveability or exhaust smoke symptoms present?	Yes	See DIAGNOSTIC INDEX to repair other symptom(s).
1		No	Go to next step.
2	PRELIMINARY CHECKS Perform the following preliminary checks: Electrical connections. Vacuum lines. Verify odor is from exhaust and not under hood (such as battery acid odor). Are all checks OK?	Yes	Go to next step.
2		No	Service as required. Verify symptom no longer exists.
3	CHECK FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM Perform fuel pressure inspection. See TEST 9: FUEL LINE/FUEL PRESSURE HOLD INSPECTION . Fuel line pressure: 240-380 kPa (35-55 psi). Is fuel pressure correct?	Yes	Go to next step.
3		No	If pressure is greater than 380 kPa (55 psi): Replace fuel pump. See FUEL PUMP MODULE . If pressure is less than 240 kPa (35 psi): Check fuel supply line for restriction.
4	CHECK FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM Check fuel pump fuel flow. See TEST 4: FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM . Did fuel system flow the required amount of fuel?	Yes	Check injector for leakage. See TEST 10: FUEL INJECTOR INSPECTION . If injector leaks, service as necessary. See FUEL INJECTORS for 2.3L engine or FUEL TANK FILLER PIPE for 3.0L (4V) engine. If injector OK, go to next step.
4		No	Check fuel supply line for restriction.
5	PERFORM PCM QUICK TEST See PCM QUICK TEST . Are any DTCs displayed during Continuous Memory, Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO), Engine OFF (KOEO) or Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO), Engine Running (KOER) Self-Tests?	Yes	Check for cause. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE NUMBERS .
5		No	Go to next step.
6	CHECK EVAP SYSTEM See EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) SYSTEM MALFUNCTION to verify EVAP system. Is a fault indicated?	Yes	Service as required.
6		No	No fault indicated at this time. Since sulphur content can vary in different fuels, suggest trying a different brand. Go to next step.
7	Verify test results. If OK, see DIAGNOSTIC INDEX to service any additional symptoms.
