Pinpoint Test 4: The Speed Control Does Not Disengage When The Clutch Is Applied

PINPOINT TEST 4: SPEED CONTROL DOES NOT DISENGAGE WHEN CLUTCH IS APPLIED

PINPOINT TEST 4 THE SPEED CONTROL DOES NOT DISENGAGE WHEN THE CLUTCH IS APPLIED
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION
Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) PID
Drive the vehicle and engage the cruise control.
Monitor the PCM TPS PID voltage while applying the clutch pedal to disengage the cruise control.
Does the PID display a return to base TPS voltage?
Yes INFORM the customer that applying the clutch pedal only disengages the cruise control and the brakes must be used to slow the vehicle down.
No GO to the next step.
2 CHECK THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE/ACCELERATOR CABLE
Key OFF.
NOTE:
  • Make sure the floor mat, insulation, wiring harnesses location, and other item do not interfere with the accelerator pedal and linkage.

Visually inspect the cruise control cable connections, the throttle body linkage, and the cruise control actuator pulley cover.
Are the cruise control cable connections, the throttle body linkage, and the cruise control actuator pulley cover OK?
Yes GO to the next step.
No INSTALL a new cruise control cable or accelerator cable. To install a new cruise control cable, see SPEED CONTROL CABLE -- 2.3L or SPEED CONTROL CABLE -- 3.0L . TEST the system for normal operation. To install a new accelerator cable, see ACCELERATOR CABLE -- 2.3L or ACCELERATOR CABLE -- 3.0L (4V) . TEST the system for normal operation.
3 VERIFY AN OPEN CIRCUIT TO THE SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR
Key OFF.
Disconnect the Speed Control Actuator 0120-101
Key ON.
Apply the clutch.
Measure the resistance between the cruise control actuator 0120-101 pin 2, circuit (LB/Y), harness side and ground.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new cruise control actuator.
See SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR . TEST the system for normal operation.
No GO to the next step.
4 CHECK THE CPP SWITCH
Key OFF.
Disconnect the CPP Switch 0120-103 Apply the clutch.
Measure the resistance between the CPP switch pin 2, and the CPP switch pin 4, component side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes GO to the next step.
No INSTALL a new CPP switch.
See EXTERNAL CONTROLS . TEST the system for normal operation.
5 CHECK CIRCUIT (LB/Y) FOR AN OPEN
Measure the resistance between the cruise control actuator 0120-101 pin 2, circuit (LB/Y), harness side and the CPP switch 0120-103 pin 4, circuit (LB/Y), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes GO to the next step.
No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
6 CHECK CIRCUIT (GY/R) FOR AN OPEN
Disconnect the PCM 0140-175b/275b.
Measure the resistance between the CPP switch 0120-103 pin 2, circuit (GY/R), harness side and the PCM 0140-175b/275b pin 41, circuit (GY/R), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes GO to the next step.
No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM MODULE OPERATION
Disconnect the PCM connectors.
Check for:
  • corrosion
  • pushed-out pins

Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes INSTALL a new PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
