Removal and Installation

WARNING:
  • Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
CAUTION:
  • Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.
CAUTION:
  • Electronic modules are sensitive to electrical charges. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) module can be damaged if exposed to these charges.

    All vehicles 

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, see BATTERY DISCONNECT .
  2. Remove the air cleaner and the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, see AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE - 2.3L , or see AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE - 3.0L (4V) .
  3. Disconnect the brake line-to-HCU fittings.
    • To install, tighten to 15 N-m (1.5 kgf-m, 11 ft-lbf).
  4. Vehicles with 3.0L engine 

  5. Remove the HCU-to-master cylinder brake tube fittings.
    • To install, tighten to. 15 N-m (1.5 kgf-m, 11 ft-lbf).
  6. All vehicles 

  7. Remove the 3 HCU bracket-to-frame bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 23 N-m (2.3 kgf-m, 17 ft-lbf).

  8. Disconnect the electrical connector by rotating the protective cover.
  9. Remove the 3 bracket-to-HCU bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 9 N-m (0.9 kgf-m, 80 in-lbf).
  10. Remove the HCU.
  11. Remove the 3 screws and the ABS module.
    • To install, tighten to 2 N-m (0.2 kgf-m, 18 in-lbf).
  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
