PINPOINT TEST 1 STARTING CONCERNS
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 PRELIMINARY CHECKS
  • Perform the following preliminary checks:
    • Battery connections
    • Starter relay connections
    • Transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T)
    • Clutch fully depressed (M/T)
    • Alarm/anti-theft devices
    • Fuses/fuse links
  • Are all the checks OK? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair as necessary.
Verify symptom no longer exists.
2 LISTEN FOR STARTER RELAY CLICKING
  • Is a clicking sound heard from the starter relay when the ignition key is turned to START? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 5.
3 CHECK STARTING SYSTEM SECONDARY CIRCUITS Yes Repair as required.
No Go to next step.
4 CHECK BASE ENGINE
  • Check for base engine concerns (such as seized/hydro-locked engine, damaged flywheel).
  • Is a fault indicated? 
Yes Repair as required.
No Verify test results.

5 CHECK OPERATION OF OTHER ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES
  • Do any other electrical accessories work? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Check the charging system.
See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - CHARGING SYSTEM .
6 PERFORM PCM KOEO SELF TEST AND RETRIEVE ANY CONTINUOUS MEMORY DTCS.
  • Are any DTCs displayed during continuous memory DTCs or key on engine off (KOEO) self-tests? 
Yes Check for cause.
See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
No Go to next step.
7 CHECK STARTING SYSTEM PRIMARY CIRCUITS Yes Go to next step.
No Service as required.
