LACK/LOSS OF POWER-ACCELERATION/CRUISE (SKYACTIV-G) DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Step Inspection Results Action
1 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION INCLUDES ROUGH IDLING 
  • Does the engine idle rough?
Yes Perform the symptom troubleshooting [ENGINE RUNS ROUGH/ROLLING IDLE].
(See ENGINE RUNS ROUGH/ROLLING IDLE [SKYACTIV-G] .)
No Go to the next step.
2 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS OVERHEATING OR OTHER 
WARNING:
  • While performing this step, always operate the vehicle in a safe and lawful manner.
  • When the M-MDS is used to observe monitor system status while driving, be sure to have another technician with you, or record the data in the M-MDS using the PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD capturing function and inspect later.
  • Access the PCM PID [ECT] using the M-MDS.

    (See PID/DATA MONITOR INSPECTION .)

  • Is the [ECT] PID value while the vehicle is being driving 116°C {241°F} or less?
Yes Go to the next step.
No The cause of this concern could be from the cooling system overheating.
3 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY DRIVE-BY-WIRE CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATES WITH BRAKE OVERRIDE SYSTEM 
  • Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM. (See DTC INSPECTION .)
  • Are any of the following DTCs displayed?
    • P2299:00
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting. (Drive-by-wire control system operates with brake override system.)

No Go to the next step.
4 VERIFY PCM DTCs 
  • Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM. (See DTC INSPECTION .)
  • Are any DTCs displayed?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
(See DTC TABLE [PCM (SKYACTIV-G)] .)
No Go to the next step.
5 VERIFY CURRENT INPUT SIGNAL STATUS 
WARNING:
  • While performing this step, always operate the vehicle in a safe and lawful manner.
  • When the M-MDS is used to observe monitor system status while driving, be sure to have another technician with you, or record the data in the M-MDS using the PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD capturing function and inspect later.
  • Access the following PIDs using the M-MDS: (See PID/DATA MONITOR INSPECTION .)

    PCM: 

    • APP1
    • APP2
    • CLTCH_PEDAL_POS (MT)
    • ECT
    • ECT_VOLT
    • FUEL_PRES
    • IAT
    • MAF
    • MAP
    • MAP_VOLT
    • TP_RELAT
    • A/F_SEN_CUR
    • HO2S_OUT_VOLT
    • SHRT_FUEL_TRIM
    • LONG_FUEL_TRIM
  • Are all monitor values normal under the conditions that the problem occurred? (See PID/DATA MONITOR TABLE [PCM (SKYACTIV-G)] .)
Yes Go to the next step.
No Inspect the suspected sensor and related wiring harness.
  • Malfunction in the sensor or wiring harness:
    • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
  • No malfunction in the sensor or wiring harness:
    • Inspect communication line between TCM and PCM. (AT)
      • Repair or replace the suspected wiring harness if necessary and perform the repair completion verification 1.
      • If there is no malfunction, go to the next step.
  • Go to the next step. (MT)
6 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY A/C SYSTEM OPERATION MALFUNCTION 
  • Verify the operation of the A/C system.
  • Is the A/C system operation normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Perform the symptom troubleshooting [A/C DOES NOT WORK SUFFICIENTLY] and [A/C IS ALWAYS ON OR A/C COMPRESSOR RUNS CONTINUOUSLY].
7 INSPECT DRIVE-BY-WIRE CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATION  Yes Visually inspect the throttle body (damage/scratching).
If there is any malfunction: 
  • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.

    If there is no malfunction: 

  • Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
8 INSPECT FUEL INJECTOR OPERATION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
9 INSPECT PURGE CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
10 INSPECT FUEL SYSTEM FOR FUEL LEAKAGE 
  • Visually inspect for fuel leakage at the fuel line.
  • Is there any leakage?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
11 INSPECT RELATED PART CONDITION  Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
12 INSPECT FUEL PRESSURE (HIGH-SIDE) 
  • Start the engine and warm it up completely.
  • Access the PCM PID [FUEL_PRES] using the M-MDS at idle. (See PID/DATA MONITOR INSPECTION .)
  • Is the PID value within specification?

    Specification: 

  • Approx. 10 MPa {102 kgf/cm2 , 1450 psi}
Yes Go to Step 14.
No Lower than specification: 
13 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN PCM AND SPILL VALVE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE (HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP) FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Replace the high pressure fuel pump and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
14 INSPECT FUEL PRESSURE (LOW-SIDE)  Yes Go to the next step.
No Inspect the following:
  • Fuel line (low pressure) restriction
  • Fuel filter clogged

    If there is any malfunction: 

  • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.

    If there is no malfunction: 

  • Replace the fuel pump unit and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to FUEL PUMP UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
15 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY THROTTLE BODY CLOGGING  Yes Go to the next step.
No Clean the throttle body and perform the repair completion verification 1.
16 INSPECT ENGINE COMPRESSION 
  • Measure the compression pressure for each cylinder. (Refer to [COMPRESSION INSPECTION ] in service information.)
  • Are compression pressures within specification?
Yes Go to Step 22.
No Go to the next step.
17 INSPECT ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING DRIVER FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING MOTOR/DRIVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
18 INSPECT ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING MOTOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING MOTOR/DRIVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
19 INSPECT ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR, HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
20 INSPECT HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATION 
  • Perform the Hydraulic Variable Valve Timing Control System Operation Inspection. (Refer to [OIL CONTROL VALVE (OCV) INSPECTION ] in service information.)
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
21 INSPECT FOR MALFUNCTION DUE TO DEVIATED VALVE TIMING  Yes Inspect for the following engine internal parts:
  • Cylinder
  • Piston ring
  • Intake valve
  • Exhaust valve
  • Such as cylinder head gasket

    If there is any malfunction: 

  • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Adjust the valve timing to the correct timing and perform the repair completion verification 1.
22 VERIFY SPARK PLUG CONDITION 
  • Inspect the spark plug condition. (Refer to SPARK PLUG INSPECTION in service information.)
  • Is the spark plug normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Spark plug is wet or covered with carbon:
  • Perform the Spark Test. (Refer to SPARK INSPECTION in service information.)
    • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.

    Spark plug is grayish white:

  • Inspect the fuel injector for restriction.
    • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
23 INSPECT EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR RESTRICTION 
  • Inspect for restriction in the exhaust system and the TWC.
  • Is there any restriction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
24 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY PCV VALVE OR FUEL INJECTOR CONTROL DRIVER (BUILT-INTO PCM) MALFUNCTION  Yes Replace the PCV valve and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION (PCV) VALVE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
No A malfunction in the fuel injector control driver can be considered.
Repair completion verification 1 VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED 
  • Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure.
  • Has the malfunction symptom been eliminated?
Yes Complete the symptom troubleshooting. (Explain contents of repair to customer)
No Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error.
