Road Test

NOTE: Before road testing, make sure fluid level and condition, and control linkage adjustments have been checked and corrected as necessary.
  1. During road test, transmission should upshift and downshift at approximately the speeds shown in Shift Speeds Chart.  All shifts may vary somewhat due to production tolerances or tire size. The important factor is quality of shifts. All shifts should be smooth, responsive, and with no engine speed flare-up.
NOTE: Shifts at full throttle and kickdown are somewhat firmer than part throttle shifts.
  2. Slipping or engine speed flare-up in any gear usually indicates clutch or band problems. The slipping clutch or band in a particular gear can usually be identified by noting transmission operation in all selector positions and comparing which internal units are applied in those positions. See Clutch and Bank Application Chart.
  3. Although this process of elimination can be used to detect any unit which slips, and to confirm proper operation of good units, actual cause of malfunction usually cannot be decided. Practically any condition can be caused by leaking hydraulic circuits or sticking valves. Therefore, unless an obvious condition exists, transmission should never be disassembled until hydraulic pressure tests have been made.
