DIGITAL TELE AID CONTROL MODULE
SERVICE INFORMATION
Severe vehicle damage, personal injury, or death from electrical shock could result.
Exercise extreme caution while executing these installation instructions. Keep the ignition and radio powered OFF through the final test.
Notes on MOST optical fibers
- Optical fibers damage easily-handle optical fibers with care to prevent cuts, nicks, abrasions, and crushing.
- Optical fiber "ring configurations" must form a closed loop to function (i.e. couple the input of a component with the output of the preceding component).
- Identify MOST optical fibers by their orange, semi-rigid insulation.
- Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from bundled vehicle electrical harnesses does not affect optical fibers.

A. PREPARING FOR THE INSTALLATION
- Read these installation instructions in their entirety before proceeding.
- To get access to the unit, see WIS document AR82.70-P-7000TB, "Removing and installing telecommunication control unit" (do not remove the unit at this point).
- Fold down the rear seat backrests.
- Remove the stowage compartment behind the rear seats by pushing it forward from the rear and unhooking the clips (Fig 2).
- Behind the rear seat, remove the carpeted cover over the telephone electronics compartment :
- Remove the plastic screw cover (A, Fig 3)
- Remove the T40 Torx bolt (B, Fig 3)
NOTE: The carpeted cover is removed and laying upside down on the load compartment floor in Fig 4.
- Use assembly wedges at both ends of the cover (A, Fig 4) to release the front clips (B, Fig 4).
- Pull the cover toward the front of the vehicle to release the rear clips (C, Fig 4).
Remove the insulation covering the telephone electronics compartment (D, Fig 4).
B. RETROFITTING THE DIGITAL TELE AID CONTROL MODULE
- Leave the analog Tele Aid control module installed to perform this step. Exchange the analog Tele Aid control module with the digital Tele Aid control module only when prompted by Star Diagnosis.
For automatically version coding the Tele Aid control module, select in Star Diagnosis:
Control units > Information and communication > Audio, video, navigation and telematics > Tele Aid > Initial Startup > Initial Startup with automatic takeover of settings of previous control unit or, for manually version coding the Tele Aid control module, select in Star Diagnosis:
Control units > Information and communication > Audio, video, navigation and telematics > Tele Aid > Initial Startup > Initial Startup with manual settings input for new control unit
See Section C, to better understand how the manual and/or automatic replacements have to be completed in Star Diagnosis.
- Remove the analog Tele Aid control module from the compartment behind the rear seat (Fig 5) by removing the screws.
- Disconnect the cables from the analog Tele Aid control module:
- Install the digital Tele Aid control module using the previously removed screws.
- Connect the cables to the digital Tele Aid control module:
- GPS Antenna connector (A, Fig 6)
- Antenna connector (B, Fig 6)
- Power supply connector (C, Fig 6)
- Power supply connector (D, Fig 6)
- MOST connector (E, Fig 6)
NOTE: Incorrect installation of connectors can result in bent pins.
Bent pins will result in component malfunction or failure.Inspect connectors before and after installation.
C. VERSION CODING
- The retrofitted digital Tele Aid control module is not activated. Activate the digital Tele Aid control module by following the Preliminary Draft of "DAS Procedure - Digital Tele Aid Control Module Retrofit" posted on Star TekInfo
.
Also see posted on Star TekInfo, the Preliminary Draft of "MMI Overview - Digital Tele Aid Control Module Retrofit"
NOTE:- Tele Aid version coding the Electronic Ignition System (EIS) control module and Central Gateway (ZGW) via Star Diagnosis is necessary. This version coding is missing from at least the 2002 production of Model Year 2003.
- The instrument cluster must be HW 40/02, SW32/02 (A211 540 84 11) or newer. The Tele Aid defective warning appears for 5-10 seconds before it is removed during Ignition On operations. It is an instrument cluster defect, not a Tele Aid defect.
- At least in some early MY03 vehicles, it has been detected that the microphone array only works for normal hands free telephone but not for service calls. If the call operator reports that he can not hear anything in the car, the micro array should be replaced. If the problem persists, the Voice Control Module should be verified as well.
