The airbag is actuated in the following order:
- Depending on the severity of the collision, the restraint systems control unit (N2/7)actuates either the driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13) or the driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13) and the driver airbag squib 2 (R12/14) via a discrete line. Depending on the severity of the accident, ignition can be simultaneous or staggered.
- Driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13) and driver airbag squib 2 (R12/14) ignite the solid fuel in the gas generator. When the solid propellant burns it generates a gas that flows "explosively" under high pressure through a filter and into the airbag.
- The airbag, which is folded on top of the inflator, then inflates, forcing open the steering wheel hub cover along a special predetermined rupture seam.
- As more gas enters the bag, it pushes through the opening and fills to maximum volume.
- The airbag reaches its full volume within approx. 45 msec.
- The airbag begins to deflate immediately after attaining maximum volume. The gas escapes from the airbag through a filter and the airbag collapses.
Disposal
Even if the severity of the accident only necessitates triggering of stage 1 of the driver airbag, the second stage is ignited with a subsequent ignition within a short time span. This ensures that both stages are deployed. The airbag unit can then be disposed of in the normal manner.
