Front passenger airbag compressed gas generator, design
Function prerequisites:
The front passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4) (4) and front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5) (4) of the front passenger airbag can be triggered on the following conditions:
- A passenger occupies the front passenger seat.
- A child seat has not been installed.
- A specific accident severity is given.
Operating procedure
Depending upon the severity of the impact the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends an electrical ignition pulse to the front passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4) (4) and additionally to the front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5) (4) of the gas generator. Ignition - depending upon the severity of the accident - will ensue simultaneously or be delayed. If the front passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4) (4) and additionally the front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5) (4) are triggered, a high pressure is generated, which is then transferred to the corresponding pressure chambers (1).
Effect
- The pressure increase in the pressure chambers causes the bursting disk (3) to fracture. The gas mixture in the pressure chambers (1) can now escape via the outlet ports (2).
- The pressure of the incoming gas causes the airbag to deploy. The airbag flap is ripped apart at the predetermined fracture points over the glove box and the airbag is fully deployed. The front passenger is cushioned by the airbag.
- The airbag reaches its full volume after approximately 50 msec.
- The bag begins to deflate immediately after reaching its maximum volume. The gas escapes from the airbag through a filter and the airbag collapses.
Disposal
Even if the nature of the accident necessitates deployment of the 1st stage of the front passenger airbag only, the 2nd stage is ignited with a subsequent ignition within a short time span. This ensures that both stages are deployed. The airbag unit can then be disposed of in the normal manner.
