Rear Sidebag - Function - GF91.60-P-4015-02S
Sidebag hybrid inflator
When the triggering threshold for the sidebag is exceeded the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends an electrical ignition pulse to the left rear sidebag squib (R12/11) (4) or the right rear sidebag squib (R12/12) (4) in the hybrid gas generator. The left rear sidebag squib (R12/11) (4) or right rear sidebag squib (R12/12) (4) ignites the solid fuel rings in the solid fuel chamber (2). The solid fuel burns off, creating a gas mixture. This gas mixture creates a high pressure in the solid fuel chamber (2) which destroys the bursting diaphragm (5) of the pressure cylinder (1).
This allows the compressed gas mixture from the pressure cylinder to flow through the exhaust vents (3) into the airbag. Under the pressure of the gas flowing into the bag, the bag rapidly inflates, tearing open the sidebag housing and the specified seam in the door lining and thrusting into the passenger compartment. The airbag reaches its maximum volume after approx. 20 msec. The bag begins to deflate immediately after reaching its maximum volume. The gas escapes the airbag via a filter. The airbag collapses.
