Kickdown, function

The driver's wish for the maximum vehicle acceleration is met by the kickdown function.

The kick-down function is activated from a pedal travel at the electronic accelerator > approx. 90 %.

When actuating the electronic accelerator, the driver notices an increase in back pressure at the kickdown point. For this purpose a kick-down simulator is integrated in the electronic accelerator.

The "Kickdown" signal is sensed by the accelerator pedal sensor, read by the CDI control unit (N3/9) or ME-SFI [ME] control unit and transmitted over Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) to the fully integrated transmission control (VGS) control unit.

Based on this information the fully integrated transmission control (VGS) control unit actuates the control solenoid valves so that the upshifts and downshifts take place at higher engine speeds in order to achieve maximum performance.
