With the DIRECT SELECT gear selector switch (S16/13) and transmission mode switch (S16/5) (model 221) or transmission modes button (A40/9s8) (model 216) it is possible to adapt the automatic process of the shift mechanism to particular operating conditions.

The shift range can in fact be changed in the forward gears while driving, however the electronic transmission control (ETC) prevents a shift at an unacceptably high engine speed.

The driver can choose between transmission mode "C", transmission mode "S" and transmission mode "M". In position "C" (comfort program) of the transmission mode switch (model 221) or the transmission modes button (model 216) in comparison with position "S" (Sport program) a longer overall ratio and thus a lower output torque is available when driving forwards and reversing. This allows the vehicle to move off more gently. In addition, the gears are not driven to maximum revs.

In position "M" (manual program) transmission modes button (model 216) or of the transmission mode switch (model 221) on model 216.376 and on model 221.176 all forward gears can be shifted directly by operating the left steering wheel gear shifter (S110/2) or the right steering wheel gear shifter (S111/2).

On model 221.179 in position "M" (manual program) of the transmission mode switch all forward gears can be shifted directly by operating the steering wheel gear shifter MINUS (S110/1) or the steering wheel gear shifter PLUS (S111/1).

A shift which would result in an unacceptably high or low rotational speed is not carried out.
