	Remove/install
	Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.	Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.	AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
1	Detach ground line from battery	Model 204	AR54.10-P-0003CW
		Model 207	AR54.10-P-0003EW

2	Remove front engine cover	Vehicles without 4MATIC
3	Remove air filter housing	Vehicles without 4MATIC

4	Remove shield (3) on exhaust manifold	Vehicles without 4MATIC
5	Remove engine compartment paneling	Model 204, 207 except model 204.9	AR61.20-P-1105EW

6	Unplug electrical connector on solenoid valve for speed-sensitive power steering	Vehicles with 4MATIC
7	Remove steering coupling	Model 204, 207 with 4MATIC	AR46.10-P-8000CW
8	Remove heat shield over engine mount on LH engine support	Model 204, 207 with 4MATIC	AR22.10-P-1260FHB
9	Remove shield (5) on starter (M1)
10	Detach contact protection on circuit 30 and remove electrical line (4) for circuit 30 on starter (M1)		*BA15.30-P-1001-01J
11	Unclip electrical lines (7) on starter (M1)	Ensure correct seating of clip (6).
12	Remove screw/bolts for starter (M1)		*BA15.30-P-1003-01J
13	Remove starter (M1) from mount in the cylinder crankcase
14	Unclip electrical line (8) for circuit 50 on cylinder crankcase	Vehicles without 4MATIC Ensure correct seating for clip (9).
15	Disconnect electrical line (8) for circuit 50 at starter (M1)		*BA15.30-P-1002-01J
16	Remove starter (M1) from below
	Checking
17	Check ring gear at the drive plate for wear and damage	When replacing the starter (M1) Rotate engine at center bolt of crankshaft in the direction of rotation.
