Hybrid System Energy Flow, Basic Function - GF08.30-P-1006A

Model all (CAR) with code ME05 (HYBRID DRIVE 80KW VARIANT (INCLUDING PLUGIN))

Model all (CAR) with code ME08 (Hybrid drive 75-84 kW VARIANT (INCLUDING PLUGIN))

Overview

This document contains the following information:

General

The electric machine can operate as a motor or as an alternator. The combustion engine operates on the drivetrain and delivers energy for driving or energy for charging the high-voltage battery. Various operating statuses result from these possibilities, each with a different energy flow.

The driver receives information about the energy flow and about the charge level of the high-voltage battery via the multifunction display. In the energy flow display, the active components of the hybrid system are highlighted. The energy flow between the individual components is shown on color.

In the following chapters, the energy flow for each operating status is explained based on the representation in the multifunction display.

IMPORTANT The percentage next to the battery symbol shows the current charge level of the high-voltage battery.

Generator mode (vehicle stationary, combustion engine running, electric machine operates as a generator), example illustration

When the vehicle is stationary, the combustion engine runs and delivers mechanical energy to the electric machine. The electric machine operates as an alternator and converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. This is stored in the high-voltage battery via the power electronics control unit.

Operating status only with combustion engine, example illustration

The energy flow occurs from the combustion engine to the driven axles.

Operating status with combustion engine (electric machine operates as a generator), example illustration

The energy flow takes place from the combustion engine to the driven axles and additionally to the electric machine. The electric machine operates as an alternator and converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. This is stored in the high-voltage battery via the power electronics control unit.

Acceleration mode (boost mode) (combustion engine running, electric machine operates as a motor), example illustration

The energy flow takes place both from the combustion engine and from the electric machine to the driven axles.

The high-voltage battery supplies the electric machine with electrical energy via the power electronics control unit. The electric machine operates as an engine and generates a torque, which supports the torque of the combustion engine in operating on the drivetrain and the driven axles.

Recuperation (electric machine operates as a generator), example illustration

The energy flow occurs from the driven axles to the electric machine. The combustion engine is in idle or it is switched off.

The kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into electrical energy by the electric machine. This is stored in the high-voltage battery via the power electronics control unit.

Electric mode (combustion engine off, electric machine operates as a motor), example illustration

The energy flow takes place from the electric machine to the driven axles.

The high-voltage battery supplies the electric machine with electrical energy via the power electronics control unit. The electric machine operates as an engine and generates a torque, which operates on the drivetrain and the driven axles.

Glide mode, example illustration

In glide mode, the combustion engine and electric machine are decoupled from the drivetrain. No energy flow is present in the drivetrain.
