Ignition ON, general points
For ignition ON, the engine management in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) is switched on and the engine prepared for starting.
Function sequence for ignition ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) transmits the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN (CAN B) to the SAM control unit (N10) and via suspension CAN 1 (CAN E1), powertrain control unit (N127) and drive CAN (CAN C) to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. Upon switching on of the ignition the circuit 15 relay (F58kR) is switched on by the SAM control unit. The circuit 15 relay forwards the on-board electrical system voltage from "circuit 30" to "circuit 15". If a voltage is present at the ME-SFI [ME] control unit at "circuit 15", the engine circuit relay 87M (F58kN) is actuated by means of a ground signal. The relay thus closes its power contact and the voltage is forwarded from Circuit 30, depending on the relevant fuses, as Circuit 87 M4 to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and as Circuit 87 M1/2/3 to the relevant sensors and actuators of the engine management.
If a voltage is present at "circuit 87 M4", the engine management is switched on and an output stage driver in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit takes over actuation of the engine circuit relay 87M.
The "circuit 31" ground connection is made from the on-board electrical system battery (G1) via the on-board electrical system battery ground point at the front right (W10) and over multiple ground lines to the right A-pillar ground point (W29/2).
When the engine management is switched on, the ME-SFI [ME] control unit carries out the following functions:
- In order to ensure complete filling of the fuel system, the fuel pump (M3) is actuated directly by the fuel system control unit (N118) (only the first time the ignition is switched ON after the vehicle is unlocked).
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit transmits the request fuel pump ON via drive CAN to the FSCU.
- Lamp check for engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) in instrument cluster (A1)
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit sends the request to switch on indicator lamp to the instrument cluster via drive CAN, powertrain control unit, suspension CAN 1, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN.
- Data exchange with the electronic ignition lock control unit (drive authorization)
The data exchange with the electronic ignition lock control unit takes place via drive CAN, powertrain control unit and suspension CAN 1.
- The left throttle valve actuator (/M1660) and right throttle valve actuator (M16/61) check their return springs (over the position of the throttle valves) and adapt their position, if necessary.
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit directly reads in the position of the left and right throttle valve actuator.
- The fault memory in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit can be read out and deleted via the diagnostic connector (X11/4). The diagnostic connector is networked to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the diagnostics CAN (CAN D) to the powertrain control unit via the suspension CAN 1 and to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit via the drive CAN.
Correction programming or diagnosis can be carried out with the XENTRY Diagnostics over the diagnostic connector. Different characteristics maps for engine management can be stored and activated with the correction programming in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit:
- Ignition map for adaptation to various fuel grades (RON correction (Research-Octane Number))
- Mixture maps for enriching the fuel/air mixture in different operating states
- Basic setting for idle speed
- Idle speed for engaged gear range
- Fault setting conditions for smooth running detection
