Location
Front:
The front bumper radar sensors on the front outside are inserted into the inner side at the left and right respectively into the front bumper.
Rear:
The outer left rear bumper radar sensor, outer right rear bumper radar sensor, integrated outer left rear bumper radar sensor and the integrated outer right rear bumper radar sensor are inserted from the inside into the rear bumper on the corresponding side.
Tasks
The following radar sensors (short range sensors) recognize objects (e.g. vehicles) in the short range area:
- PRE-SAFE® Impulse side:
- Left outer front bumper radar sensor
- Right outer front bumper radar sensor
- Blind Spot Assist:
- Left outer rear bumper radar sensor
- Right outer rear bumper radar sensor
- Distance Pilot DISTRONIC, Steering Pilot, Active Lane Keeping Assist (with code 238 (Active Lane Keeping Assist)), Active Blind Spot Assist, PRE-SAFE® rear end:
- Left outer rear bumper integrated radar sensor
- Right outer rear bumper integrated radar sensor
Structure
The high band width of the radar sensors allows a very precise position statement to be made and optimizes separation of objects lying close to each other.
The integrated outer right rear bumper radar sensor and the integrated outer left rear bumper radar sensor operate based on the master/slave principle. The master or slave function can be determined via the connector coding. The master function is defined for the integrated right rear bumper radar sensor. In other words, the integrated left rear bumper radar sensor sends its information via the periphery CAN to the integrated right rear bumper radar sensor which evaluates the corresponding information from both integrated rear bumper radar sensors and sends corresponding requests or data via the periphery CAN to the corresponding control units.
The coding (differentiation) for the individual radar sensors takes place by means of appropriate assignment with circuit 31 on pin 5 and 6.
The front left bumper radar sensor, front right bumper radar sensor, left outer rear bumper radar sensor and right outer rear bumper radar sensor are actuated and evaluated by the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive control unit (N62/4). The radar sensor signals are transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive control unit via the following CAN connections:
- Periphery CAN (CAN PER)
- Radar-CAN front (CAN S1) (with code 292 (PRE-SAFE® pulse side))
- Radar-CAN rear (CAN S2)
Peripherals CAN
The Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive control unit communicates with the following radar sensors via the periphery CAN:
- Left outer rear bumper integrated radar sensor. Right outer rear bumper integrated radar sensor
Radar-CAN front (with code 292 (PRE-SAFE® pulse side))
The Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive control unit communicates with the following radar sensors via radar CAN front:
- Left outer front bumper radar sensor
- Right outer front bumper radar sensor
Rear radar CAN
The Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive control unit communicates with the following radar sensors via radar CAN rear:
- Left outer rear bumper radar sensor
- Right outer rear bumper radar sensor
