Output to the front axle transmission
4MATIC output, general
A propeller shaft (1) performs the transmission of torque from the output of the transfer case (3) to the front axle transmission (2). The constant velocity joint at the transmission end of the propeller shaft (1) is integrated in the driven gear of the output. The propeller shaft tube is pushed onto the joint fork of the output by means of drive-type splines. A straight assembly of the constant velocity joints to each other is required in order to guarantee a uniform transfer of the rotation. On the front axle transmission side, the propeller shaft (1) is screwed via a propeller shaft flange with the drive pinion of the front axle transmission.
Constant velocity joint
Generally, a constant velocity joint, which runs under an angular offset, generates an unequal rotary motion. If the angles that form between the axles of the propeller shaft tube and the joint forks are equal in size and lie at the same level, the unequal values of both constant velocity joints are offset. The output speed of the propeller shaft to the front axle transmission is thus equal.
