Support Yoke-To-Rack Clearance

  1. Clean steering gear exterior and mount gear in soft-jawed vise or holding fixture. Remove yoke cover, gasket, shims and yoke spring.
  2. Clean cover and housing flange areas. Reinstall yoke and cover without gasket, spring or shims. Tighten cover bolts until cover just touches yoke.
  3. Measure gap between cover and housing flange. Then select shims which, together with cover gasket, are .005-.006" (.13-.15 mm) thicker than measured gap.
  4. Remove cover and assemble gasket on housing flange. Install shim pack, spring and cover. Install and tighten bolts evenly. Check that steering gear operates smoothly without binding or looseness.
