Transaxle Disassembly

NOTE: For identification and position verification of thrust bearings and washer, see Figure .
  1. Ensure outside of transaxle is thoroughly clean. Mount transaxle on stand. Remove and drain torque converter. Remove drain plug from transaxle if fluid was not drained before removal. Remove oil cooler tube from case. Set manual shift linkage rod to park position. Remove Manual Lever Position (MLP) switch.
CAUTION: Transaxle oil pan magnet location must be marked to ensure magnets are returned to original location during reassembly. Magnetic field created by oil pan magnets can affect solenoid operation.
  2. Remove oil pan. Remove and discard oil filter. Remove valve body bolts "A", "B" and "C". See Figure . Remove spring clip from valve body wiring harness grommet. Push wiring harness into case.
  3. Remove valve body from case. Remove D-R accumulator spring. Apply compressed air to D-R oil passage to remove accumulator piston. See Figure . Apply compressed air to N-D oil passage to remove accumulator piston. Remove spring.
  4. Remove 3 low/reverse clutch apply oil transfer tube bolts. Remove oil transfer tube. Remove 21 converter housing-to-case bolts. Using soft-faced hammer, remove converter housing from transaxle case. Remove differential assembly from transaxle case.
  5. Remove 8 oil pump bolts and remove oil pump assembly with baffle plate from converter housing. Remove reverse clutch drum thrust washer and bearing race from oil pump assembly. Loosen and remove band adjusting stop with locknut.
  6. Remove 2-4 band and band strut from transaxle case. If band is to be reused, secure opening of band for storage. Remove 2-4 servo piston retainer. Using compressed air, remove 2-4 servo assembly. See Figure . Remove 3-4 clutch/reverse clutch assembly with input shaft.
  7. Remove reverse clutch assembly from input shaft and 3-4 clutch assembly. Remove thrust washer and hub bearing from either end of input shaft. Remove 3-4 clutch hub and primary sun gear from case. Disassemble 3-4 clutch hub with thrust washer from primary sun gear. See Fig 1 . Remove primary sun gear lower thrust washer from front planetary.

  8. Remove low one-way clutch pressure plate snap ring. Hold one-way clutch and turn transaxle case over. Assistance may be required. Rotate front planetary and remove low one-way clutch. Tap case with soft-faced hammer to aid in removal if clutch is stuck.
  9. Turn transaxle over. Remove low/reverse clutch piston pressure plate snap ring. Remove front planetary gear and low/reverse clutch piston assembly and disassemble. See Figure . Remove piston spring retainer. Remove rear sun gear front thrust bearing from front planetary gear. Remove rear planetary gear with rear sun gear from case. Remove 2 thrust bearings from planetary gear.
  10. Remove forward clutch hub and ring gear assembly. Remove coasting clutch hub with thrust washer. Remove forward clutch hub assembly with thrust washer. Remove low/reverse clutch pressure plate snap ring. Remove low/reverse clutch pressure plate, steel and friction plates. See Figure . Measure thickness of low/reverse friction discs. Thickness should be .071" (1.8 mm). Wear limit is .063" (1.6 mm). Replace low/reverse friction discs as needed.
  11. Remove side cover bolts and lightly tap side cover with soft-faced hammer to remove. If output shaft is removed with side cover, separate shaft from cover by tapping with soft-faced hammer. Remove output shaft bearing shim. Remove output shaft if not previously removed.
  12. Remove output shaft hub thrust washer. Remove output shaft bearing retainer bolts and retainer. Place manual shift linkage rod into park position to lock idler gear.
NOTE: Only remove idler gear, idler gear shaft and reduction gear if components or bearings are worn.
  13. Using appropriate chisel and hammer, unstake idler gear locknut. Remove and discard locknut. Using appropriate puller, remove idler gear from shaft. Remove reduction gear. Remove adjusting shim from reduction gear shaft.
