3-4 Clutch: Reassembly

  1. Assemble components in reverse order of disassembly. Apply ATF to NEW seals. Replace seal rings on input shaft. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between each seal ring and groove. Clearance should be .003-.009" (.08-.23 mm). If clearance is not within specification, replace 3-4 clutch drum and input shaft.
  2. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between snap ring and pressure plate. See Fig 2 . Clearance should be .071-.087" (1.80-2.20 mm). Service limit is .118" (3.00 mm). If clearance is not within specification, install correct pressure plate. Pressure plates range in thickness from .118" (3.00 mm) to .150" (3.80 mm), in .008" (.20 mm) increments. Hold assembled 3-4 clutch drum assembly and apply compressed air to port and air check assembly.
  3. Apply petroleum jelly to NEW oil distributor sleeve seals. Wrap seals with thick paper and tape securely to prevent seals from spreading prior to reassembly.
