Cylinder Head: Disassembly

    CAUTION: Do not place the cylinder head flat on the bench; the valves will bend.
    CAUTION: Before disassembly begins, mark the valve position on the face of each valve being removed. The valves must be re-installed into the same positions.

  1. Install the special tool.
  2. Using the special tool, compress the intake valve spring.

  3. NOTE: Valve stem seals should be visually inspected if new seals are not installed.

  4. Remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring retainer, the valve spring and the valve stem seal.
  5. Using the special tool, compress the exhaust valve spring.

  6. NOTE: Valve stem seals should be visually inspected if new seals are not installed.

  7. Remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring retainer, the valve spring and the valve stem seal.
  8. Remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket and the intake camshaft bolt, washer and spacer.

  9. Compress the tensioner and install a lock pin.

  10. Remove the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket.

  12. Remove the tensioner.
  13. Remove the camshafts.

  14. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.

  15. Remove the valve stem seals.

  16. CAUTION: The outer bolts on the outer cam bearing cap (exhaust) are longer and must be returned to the same location or engine damage can occur.
    NOTE: Identify the camshaft-to-cylinder head location. Caps are not interchangeable.

  17. Remove the bolts and the camshaft bearing cap assemblies.
