Secondary Winding Test
Disconnect wiring from ignition coil. Set ohmmeter on x1000 scale. Connect ohmmeter across coil negative terminal and coil tower. Reading should be 8000-11,500 ohms. If incorrect, replace ignition coil.
NOTE:
Whenever a high-tension wire is replaced or removed from spark plugs, coil or distributor, apply dielectric compound to inside of boot before connecting wire. Shorted Windings Test
- Disconnect wiring from ignition coil. Connect ammeter between coil connector positive terminal and coil positive terminal. Connect a jumper wire between coil negative terminal and engine ground.
- Place ignition switch in "RUN" position and note reading on ammeter. Current draw should be about 6.5 volts. If reading is higher, coil windings are shorted. Replace ignition coil.
