Diagnostic Procedure
- Start and run engine for 5 seconds or longer. Do not move vehicle. Turn ignition switch to "LOCK" position. Depress brake pedal.
- Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. Operating sound (dull clicking sound) of modulator should be heard. If operating sound of modulator is heard, solenoid valve is operating properly. If operating sound is not heard, check all circuits to modulator. Repair as necessary.
- To complete a functional test of system, raise rear of vehicle and support with jack stands. Ensure rear wheels are completely off ground. Start engine. Place shift lever into second gear.
- Accelerate vehicle to 19 MPH. While holding accelerator pedal, depress brake pedal suddenly. Brake system will attempt to stop rear wheels. Rear wheels should not totally stop because modulator should be controlling brake fluid pressure to rear wheels.
- If brake system malfunctions, ensure other brake system components are functioning properly. If other brake components are okay, refer to TESTING in this article for component testing to determine rear wheel lock-up component causing failure.
