DTC 12: Abs/TPS Correlation Error: Testing

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect MUT II (MB991502) or equivalent scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under driver side of dash. See Figure. On scan tool select data list item No. 13 THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR OUTPUT. Turn ignition on. THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR OUTPUT parameter on scan tool display should change smoothly without any dropout, from 300 mV at closed throttle to 5500 mV at wide open throttle. If parameter does not display as specified, go to next step. If parameter displays as specified, go to step  4.
  2. Check APP sensor operation. See ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR  under COMPONENT TESTS. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace APP sensor. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC.
  3. Check for poor terminal connections, open or shorted condition in circuits between APP sensor and TCS ECU harness connectors. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC. If no problem with wiring is found, replace TCS ECU. See TRACTION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC.
  4. Check vacuum actuator operation. See VACUUM ACTUATOR  under COMPONENT TESTS. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace vacuum actuator. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TPS 4-pin harness connector. TPS is located on throttle body, integral to APP sensor. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and TPS harness connector terminal No. 4 (Green/Yellow wire). See Figure. Voltage reading should be 4.8-5.2 volts. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  7.
  6. Check for poor terminal connections, open or shorted condition in circuits between TPS and PCM harness connectors. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC. If no problem with wiring is found, replace PCM. See COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC.
  7. Check TPS operation. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If problem is found, replace TPS. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 28-pin harness connector B-110. PCM is located under center of dash, forward of center console. See Figure. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector B-110 terminal No. 78 (Brown/Red wire). See Fig 1. Voltage should raise smoothly without any dropout, between .30-1.0 volt at closed throttle to 4.5-5.5 volts at wide open throttle. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  10.
  9. Check for and repair poor terminal connections, open or shorted condition in circuits between TPS and PCM harness connector B-110. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC.
  10. Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connection in PCM harness connectors. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC. If no problem with wiring is found, replace PCM. See COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repair, recheck for symptom and DTC.
