Test C: Engine Does Not Start

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Measure battery voltage while cranking engine. If battery voltage is less then 8 volts, check battery condition. Repair or replace battery as necessary. If battery is okay, check for immobilizer-ECU or MFI DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If immobilizer system DTCs are set, perform appropriate DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If MFI system DTC is set, see SELF DIAGNOSTICS - MONTERO article under ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are set, go to next step.
  2. Check starting system performance. See appropriate STARTERS article under STARTING AND CHARGING SYSTEMS. Repair system as necessary. If starting system is okay and engine still can not be started, replace immobilizer-ECU. See IMMOBILIZER-ECU  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system for normal operation.
