Strut Assembly: Disassembly
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING:
To prevent the piston rod self-locking nut inside the strut from loosening, DO NOT use an impact wrench when the self-locking nut is loosened.
CAUTION:
DO NOT tighten the bolt of Spring Compressor (MB991237) too tight. The Spring Compressor (MB991237) will be broken if the bolt it tightened more than 55 ft. lbs. (74 N.m). Install Spring Compressor (MB991237) and Arm Set (MB991238) evenly and so that the maximum length will be attained within installation range. DO NOT use an impact wrench to tighten the bolt of Spring Compressor (MB991237).
- Using Spring Compressor (MB991237) and Arm Set (MB991238), compress the coil spring. See Fig 1 . Using Wrench (MB991681) and Socket (MB991682), secure the strut and then remove the self-locking nut. See Fig 2 .
- Remove strut insulator assembly. See Fig 3 .
- Remove bearing.
- Remove upper spring seat.
- Remove upper spring pad.
- Remove bump stopper.
- Remove soil spring.
- Remove lower spring pad.
- The gas must be discharged from the strut assembly before discarding it. Place the assembly horizontally with its piston rod extended. Then drill a hole of approximately 0.1" (3.0 mm) in diameter at location shown and discharge the gas. See Fig 4 .
WARNING:
Wear goggles when drilling to protect your eyes from flying metal debris.
