Strut Assembly: Disassembly

NOTE: Numbers in parenthesis refer to numbers in illustration.
  1. Remove strut cover (1). See Fig 1 .
  2. WARNING: To prevent the valve inside the strut to dropout, DO NOT use an impact wrench to remove the self-locking.
    CAUTION: DO NOT tighten the bolt of Spring Compressor (MB991237) too tight. The Spring Compressor (MB991237) will be broken if the bolt it tightened more than 55 ft. lbs. (74 N.m). Install Spring Compressor (MB991237) and Arm Set (MB991238) evenly and so that the maximum length will be attained within installation range. DO NOT use an impact wrench to tighten the bolt of Spring Compressor (MB991237).
  3. Using Spring Compressor (MB991237) and Arm Set (MB991238), compress the coil spring. See Fig 2 . Using Wrench (MB991681) and Socket (MB991682), secure the strut and then remove the strut nut. See Fig 3 .
  4. Remove strut insulator. See Fig 1 .
  5. Remove bearing.
  6. Remove upper spring seat.
  7. Remove strut damper.
  8. Remove strut cover (6).
  9. Remove coil spring.
  10. Remove lower spring pad.
  11. WARNING: Wear goggles when drilling to protect your eyes from flying metal debris.
  12. The gas must be discharged from the strut assembly before discarding it. Place the assembly horizontally with its piston rod extended. Then drill a hole of approximately 0.1" (3.0 mm) in diameter at location shown in illustration and discharge the gas. See Fig 4 .
