GROUP 00 - General
TIN-17-00-003: ELECTRICAL INSULATING GLOVES - All i-MiEV.
TIN-17-00-003 was released recently and states:
"Certified i-MiEV dealers were shipped an i-MiEV Special Tool kit. Included in this kit is a set of electrically insulated gloves, MB992648-01. While servicing an i-MiEV, these gloves are essential in protecting a Technician from a potentially fatal electric shock. We would like to reiterate the importance of properly maintaining these gloves and adhering to the following guidelines:
- Inspect the gloves for holes and cracks before every use. Do not use the gloves if a defect is found.
- Always use the leather protector and gloves together. Never use either piece separately as they do not provide adequate protection from electric shock.
- Do not expose the gloves to petroleum products. Hand soaps and detergents may contain petroleum products that will damage your gloves.
For additional information, please review the attached instruction sheet originally provided with the gloves.
If the gloves fail the inspection or you would rather purchase new gloves, they can be ordered from Bosch Automotive Service Solutions (formerly SPX) at 1-888-727-6672. If sourced locally, ensure you purchase gloves with an OSHA rating of Class 0 (1000V)."
GROUP 13 - Fuel
DTC P0421: PROPER CATALYST DIAGNOSIS AND PART IDENTIFICATION - 2014-15 Outlander Sport/RVR w/2.0L engine.
MMNA has been monitoring replacement of catalytic converters on 2014 and 2015 Outlander Sport/RVR. In several cases dealers have incorrectly replaced the center exhaust pipe with downstream catalyst instead of the exhaust manifold with the primary catalyst that is being monitored. During diagnosis of DTC P0421 refer to the following article on high sulfur content gasoline (reprinted from Tech Talk Vol. 219) for additional information. If it is determined during diagnosis that catalyst replacement is required on an affected vehicle, then replace the exhaust manifold with catalytic converter (current P/N 1555A757). DO NOT replace the center exhaust pipe (P/Ns 1570C689, 1570C694 or 1570C892) for DTC P0421. Vehicles with the incorrect catalyst replaced are likely to return with the same DTC and dealers are subject to warranty claim debits. Keep in mind that the monitored catalytic converter will have an O2 sensor before and after the catalyst. See illustrations below for the two locations.
√ DTCs P0420 & P0421 DUE TO HIGH SULFUR CONTENT GASOLINE - 2013-15 Outlander Sport/RVR.
The following paragraph comes directly from the Owner's Manual and addresses Poor Quality/High Sulfur Gasoline:
"Gasoline sold in parts of the country other than California is allowed to have a higher sulfur content. Using such gasoline could adversely affect the vehicle's catalytic converter and cause the engine malfunction indicator ("SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "Check engine light") to come on. Illumination of this indicator while using high-sulfur gasoline does not necessarily mean the vehicle's emission-control system is malfunctioning.
Your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer may suggest you try using a different, lower-sulfur brand of unleaded gasoline to determine whether the problem is fuel-related."
During the colder months, especially when reformulated gasoline is used, dealers report DTCs P0420, P0421, and P0137 for catalytic converter and O2 sensor concerns. In many cases, testing of returned parts has revealed no trouble with the function of these parts. If a customer reports the MIL illuminated due to the subject DTCs for catalytic converter or O2 sensor operation, has no drivability issues and no faults can be found with standard diagnosis, please ask the customer where their fuel is being purchased. After recording the DTCs, Mode $06 and FFD, clear the DTCs and suggest that a Top Tier gasoline be used for several tanks if they have not regularly used Top Tier gasoline. If these DTCs are eliminated after switching to a Top Tier gasoline then previous gasoline with a high sulfur content was likely the cause.
Do not replace any related parts until the customer has used Top Tier gasoline for at least 3 tank refills. Top Tier Detergent Gasoline helps drivers avoid lower quality gasoline which can leave deposits on critical engine parts, affect in-use emissions, and reduce engine performance.

GROUP 26 - Front Axle
PROPER FRONT WHEEL BEARING INSTALLATION - 2012-current i-MiEV, 2014-17 Mirage, 2017 Mirage G4, 2008-current Lancer, 2010-current Sportback, 2012-15 Lancer Evolution, 2007-current Outlander, 2011-current Outlander Sport/RVR.
When replacing front wheel bearings on models equipped with wheel speed sensors that are triggered by a magnetic encoder on the bearing, it is important to install the bearing correctly. Be sure to install the wheel bearing into the knuckle with the shiny side facing outwards (towards the wheel/tire), and the matte side with the magnetic encoder (usually black or dark brown) facing inwards. Examples of wheel bearings from two models are shown in the following photos.

TPMS RECEPTION ISSUE: UPDATED QUESTIONNAIRE AVAILABLE - 2014-17 Mirage and 2017 Mirage G4.
The "TPMS Reception Issue" questionnaire has been updated, and is now available on MDL under service -> service tech resources -> Service Related Items -> Worksheets, Questionnaires, Job Aids. This questionnaire is REQUIRED when returning TPMS sensors for 2014-17 Mirage and 2017 Mirage G4. Please follow instructions in TIN-17-31-001REV, described in the next article, to submit the completed questionnaire to the PRC.
TIN-17-31-001REV: PHOTO REQUIRED CONDITION (PRC) FOR TPMS SENSOR REPLACEMENT - REVISED - 2014-17 Mirage and 2017 Mirage G4.
TIN-17-31-001REV was released recently and states:
"This TIN supersedes TIN-17-31-001, issued March, 2017, to include the updated required Questionnaire at the end.
When replacing a TPMS sensor under warranty on 2014 - 2017 Mirage and 2017 Mirage G4 vehicles, accurate photos and a completed "TPMS Reception Issue" Questionnaire MUST be posted to the Photo Required Condition & Pre Approval Center. If no photos and/or questionnaire are submitted, or photos are submitted that do not show the proper detail (see examples in this TIN), dealers are in jeopardy of being debited for the claim.
The following are REQUIRED for all TPMS sensor claims:
- Return the entire TPMS transmitter and valve stem.
- A photo of the TPMS transmitter and valve stem taken when the tire was dismounted at your dealership. The photo must show whether or not the sensor was attached to the wheel (valve stem) or loose inside the tire upon arrival.
GOOD photos: Below are two examples of "Good" photos submitted to the PRC. In one case, the sensor was attached to the wheel, and the other shows it was loose in the tire.
NOT GOOD photos: Below are two examples of "Not Good" or unacceptable photos submitted to the PRC.
A photo of the sensor by itself or of the outside of the wheel does NOT show where the sensor was in relation to the wheel and tire upon arrival at the dealership.
- Completed Questionnaire "TPMS Reception Issue." This can be found on MDL or through the Techline Main Screen (also attached at the end of this TIN).
- Techline: Click on the "Worksheets, Questionnaires, Job Aids" button, click on "TPMS Reception Issue" under "Questionnaires"
- MDL: Go to service -> service tech resources -> Service Related Items -> Worksheets, Questionnaires, Job Aids -> Questionnaires
- Select the category "TPMS SENSORS IN WHEEL PHOTOS."
- Enter the following in the "Defect Description and Projected Repair Process" field in the PRC:
- A list of the failure DTCs that were set.
- Whether or not the tire was previously dismounted prior to this service (for example, "Yes, the tire was dismounted" or "No, the tire was never dismounted). Obtain this information from the customer if necessary.
EXAMPLES OF SUBMITTED COMMENTS
GOOD EXAMPLE: "TPMS light remains on. DTC C1931 will not erase. Customer reported tire was never previously dismounted. TPMS sensor was attached to the wheel when the tire was dismounted."
NOT GOOD EXAMPLE: "Sensor failed."
MMNA will issue a Warranty Parts Return Request for all replaced (Mirage) TPMS sensors (which includes the valve stem).
Please continue posting the TPMS sensor photos to the PRC until a cancellation notice is published by MMNA headquarters."
GROUP 54 - Chassis Electrical
"THIS FUNCTION IS NOT SUPPORTED" MESSAGE ON DAS - 2017 Mirage, Mirage G4.
The Display Audio with Smartphone Link (DAS) system on 2017 Mirage and Mirage G4 models may display the message "This function is not supported" when a customer pushes the voice recognition button on the steering wheel controls.
This can happen whether or not a phone is paired to the DAS (without a cable), as shown in the two following examples.
Dealers should explain that this system does NOT have the voice command feature, even when a phone is paired. To initiate a call, the user must press the phone icon on the display screen. When a paired phone is connected to the DAS via a cable, and Apple Carplay or Android Auto is operating, the voice recognition button on the steering wheel will enable voice recognition, but ONLY through the phone's own voice command function (provided the phone is equipped with that feature).
WINDSHIELD WIPER ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TERMINALS AVAILABLE - 2011-15 Outlander Sport/RVR.
If dealers are attempting repair of the windshield wiper motor connector be advised that individual pre-crimped terminals with several inches of wire are available thru the Mitsubishi special service tools program. The specific waterproof terminal for this application is P/N MU800554. Contact Bosch Automotive Service Solutions Inc. at (888) 727-6672 or their website (http://mitsubishidealersolutions.com/tools) to place an order.
GROUP 55 - Heater, Air Conditioning and Ventilation
ADDITIONAL HOSE CLAMP FOR HVAC DRAIN HOSE REPAIRS - 2014-17 Mirage, 2017 Mirage G4.
When making repairs on vehicles with a detached drain hose, dealers should add a hose clamp (P/N MS660220) to the HVAC drain hose, at the HVAC box drain pipe/hose union.
A detached drain hose is usually identified when water is found on the passenger side floor under the carpet.
Be sure to mount the hose clamp with the tab facing up, and 5-8 mm away from the end of the hose.
REPLACEMENT OF A/C COMPRESSOR VS A/C COMPRESSOR AND CLUTCH ASSEMBLY - All models.
Should an A/C compressor need to be replaced, dealers should utilize the most cost effective repair option. Most of the time, the A/C compressor is available without the clutch assembly and can be purchased for less expense than the A/C compressor and clutch assembly (Outlander Sport/RVR shown below for example).
GROUP 60 - Recalls
TIN-16-SR-003-F: CROSS MEMBER CORROSION SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN - "REMEDY AVAILABLE" CUSTOMER LETTERS - Certain 2002-07 Lancer, 2004 Lancer Wagon, 2003-06 Lancer Evolution, 2003-06 Outlander, 2007-13 V6 Outlander.
TIN-16-SR-003-F was released recently and states:
"Customer letters for the Cross Member Corrosion Safety Recall Campaign are being mailed this week to the final set of 37,000 owners of vehicles involved in this campaign, informing them that remedy parts are now available. If one of these customers contacts your dealership after receiving this letter, please perform the procedures outlined in SR-16-003 on the affected vehicle.
If you encounter a vehicle which has excessive cross member corrosion, but is not covered under this campaign (i.e., never registered in a salt belt state), contact your DPSM for further directions.
As a reminder, MMNA would like to better understand the severity of the cross member corrosion on vehicles requiring cross member replacement. Therefore, all cross member replacement recall claims must include photos of vehicle cross members inspected and found to exhibit perforation(s), and those photos must be posted to the Photos Required Condition (PRC) system in the "cross member" category. The photos must be of the cross member still installed on the vehicle, and must clearly show the perforation or the results of the punch test (step 4 of the inspection procedure outlined in Safety Recall Bulletin SR-16-003) indicating the need for replacement, along with other areas of the cross member that exhibit corrosion.
Dealers must review the Warranty Superscreen to confirm if any vehicles in their new or used vehicle inventories are affected, and conduct this campaign prior to delivering them. When checking for applicability of this campaign (C1609R), please check for and complete any other open campaigns. Always obtain the customer's approval before completing a campaign on a customer owned vehicle."
ATIN-16-SR-004-A: RAIDER PASSENGER SIDE FRONTAL AIR BAG INFLATOR SAFETY RECALL - Certain 2006-09 Raider.
ATIN-16-SR-004-A was released recently and states:
"A safety recall campaign will be released today for the passenger side frontal air bag inflator in certain 2006 - 2009 Raider vehicles. The Recall Bulletin outlining the repair procedure will be available today on MEDIC and MDL.
Due to a manufacturing defect, the passenger side frontal air bag inflator housing may rupture, due to excessive internal pressure, during normal air bag deployment events. This condition is more likely to occur if a vehicle has been exposed to high levels of absolute humidity for extended periods of time. An inflator rupture, during air bag deployment events, could result in metal fragment(s) striking the vehicle occupant(s) resulting in serious injury or death.
Dealers are requested to replace the passenger side frontal air bag inflator with a new desiccated one. Currently, there is an extremely limited parts availability; however, sufficient parts are expected to arrive in May 2017, at which time MMNA will begin mailing notification letters to owners. MMNA will inform you when customer notification letters will begin mailing so that you can anticipate the phone calls and demand volume.
Some dealers will get a forced allocation of 1 air bag inflator unit. Parts shipments will be processed via the 'R' order type and will begin shipping on Monday, April 3, 2017. Dealers may place additional orders via the MDL for customer needs. Please refer to Parts Bulletin 37-RD-01-17 for additional information.
The replaced inflator must be returned to Takata directly for testing and analysis. The new air bag inflators are packaged with shipping instructions. It is okay to contact the FCA dealer hotline to start the return shipping process. Please refer to the Recall Bulletin for additional details. Please note that the air bag inflator return process for this campaign may be different from other Takata air bag inflator campaigns (e.g., SR-14-012, SR-16-002, and SR-17-001).
Dealers must review the Warranty Superscreen to confirm if any vehicles in their new or used vehicle inventories are affected, and conduct this campaign prior to delivering them. When checking for applicability of this campaign (C1604R), please check for and complete any other open campaigns. It is extremely important that you check for and complete the driver side front air bag inflator campaign (C1507R) along with this campaign. Always get the customer's approval before completing a campaign on a customer owned vehicle."
TIN-16-SR-011-C: SECOND REPAIRS AFTER COMPLETION OF LIFT GATE GAS SPRING CORROSION SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN - Certain 2011, 2012, 2016 Outlander Sport/RVR.
TIN-16-SR-011-C was released recently and states:
"It has come to our attention that some dealership personnel may have been using vice grips or a similar clamping device on the new, replacement lift gate gas springs when performing this recall remedy. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) would like to remind everyone that the procedures outlined in SR-16-011 (available on MEDIC and MDL) must be followed when performing this recall remedy. Clamping devices must never be used on the replacement lift gate gas springs. Usage of clamping devices on the replacement lift gate gas spring(s) could cause them to develop a leak.
Always properly support the lift gate prior to removal of the old lift gate gas springs. Do NOT take any shortcut by clamping the lift gate gas springs.
Customer satisfaction is important to MMNA, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind you that the proper procedures must be followed to fix the customer's vehicle right the first time as well as maintain or improve the condition and cleanliness of the vehicle upon return to the customer."
