"NO START" DUE TO SOLID CORE IGNITION WIRES
TECHNICAL INFORMATION TIP
NO START DUE TO SOLID CORE IGNITION WIRES
YEAR(S): 1987
MANUFACTURER: Nissan
MODEL(S): Sentra
DATE OF ISSUE: March, 1995
ISSUE & TIP
A 1987 Nissan Sentra was towed into my shop after three other shops had tried to figure out why it would not run. A new distributor, carburetor, and ECU had all been installed, all to no avail. Each attempt to start the engine would result in a few ignition spark outputs and then nothing. The ECU would quit pulsing the power transistor after a few pulses.
We had eliminated voltage spike-producing solenoids and tested transistors, etc. before noticing that the customer had installed solid core ignition wires. The coil wire was inducing 20 volts into the ECU and causing it to shutdown. Replacing the wires corrected the problem.
