DTC 32: EGR Function

NOTE: On California models, DO NOT perform this test if DTC 12, 13, 35, or 43 is present.

  1. Check EGR Valve Operation

Apply vacuum to EGR valve. If EGR functions correctly, go to next step. If EGR valve does not function correctly, repair or replace as necessary.
  2. Check Vacuum Source To EGR Valve

Start engine and warm to operating temperature. Disconnect hose from EGRC solenoid valve and check vacuum. See Fig 1 . Vacuum should not be present. Raise engine speed to about 2000 RPM and check vacuum. Vacuum should be present. If vacuum is as specified, go to next step. If vacuum is not as specified, check vacuum hose and throttle body vacuum port. Repair or replace as necessary.
  3. Check ECM Output Signal

Start engine. Connect voltmeter between ECM terminal No. 102 (Brown wire) and ground. See Figure . At idle, voltmeter should be read 0.7-0.8 volt. At 2500 RPM, voltmeter should read battery voltage. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step 5).
  4. Check Power Supply

Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between EGR solenoid valve harness connector terminal "b" and ground. See Fig 2 . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair wiring harness and/or connectors as necessary.
  5. Check Ground Circuit

Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM and EGRC wiring harness connector. See Figure . Measure resistance between ECM terminal No. 102 (Brown wire) and EGRC harness connector terminal "b" (Brown wire). See Figure and Fig 3 . If resistance is about zero ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not about zero ohms, repair circuit or connector as necessary.
  6. Check Component

Check ECT sensor. On California models, check EGR temperature sensor. See SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Repair or replace as necessary and perform FINAL CHECK in this article.
