Anti-Lock Brake System: Description

Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) prevents wheel lock-up, allowing driver to maintain steering control during heavy braking. ABS consists of an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) with an LED that displays self-diagnostic codes, actuator (electro-hydraulic unit), warning light, wheel speed sensors, wiring and hydraulic lines. See ELECTRICAL COMPONENT LOCATIONS table. See Fig 1.

Actuator (electro-hydraulic unit) consists of a pump motor, accumulator, solenoid valves for each channel, actuator relay, pump motor relay, check valves and reservoirs.
