SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 1996-97 Sentra/200SX vehicle built from 1/96 through 9/96 has a shift release button that breaks or falls out of position, use this bulletin to install a countermeasure button.

The countermeasure release button may be ordered as a service replacement part.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. With the ignition off, the parking brake set and the shift lever in neutral, remove any pieces of the broken release button from the shift knob.
  2. Remove the screw that attaches the shift knob to the shift lever. See Fig 1
  3. Raise the knob assembly straight up (approximately 1/2 inch) on the shift lever.
  4. Install the original spring and the new release button. If a new spring is required, use the part number from the table below.
  5. Hold the button in while pressing the knob assembly back down into its correct location.
  6. Reinstall the screw.
  7. Test for proper operation.
