Driver-side AIR Bag Module

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Remove driver-side air bag module from vehicle and place module on a clean, dry work bench, with trim cover facing upward. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE & SPIRAL CABLE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Drill a 0.335" (8.5 mm) diameter hole in Air Bag Module Deployment Bracket (J41246) at position in illustration. See Fig 1 . Using wire at least 0.04" (1 mm) in diameter, secure air bag module to air bag module bracket in 2 places. Firmly secure air bag module bracket in a vise. See Fig 2 .
  3. Position a fully charged 12-volt battery at least 16 feet (4.9 m) from deployment area. See Fig 3 . Connect Deployment Tool (J38381) to air bag module connector using Deployment Tool Adapter (J38381-70). Connect Red clip of deployment tool to positive battery terminal and Black clip to negative battery terminal. Ensure that deployment tool power light glows Green. If deployment tool power light glows Red, reverse battery connections and recheck light.
  4. Ensure no one is within 16 feet (4.9 m) of air bag module. Press deployment tool button to instantly deploy driver air bag module.
