Rear Drum Brake: Installation

- Always perform shoe clearance adjustment. Refer to "ADJUSTMENT ".
- Burnish the brake contact surfaces after refinishing or replacing drums, after replacing linings, or if a soft pedal occurs at very low mileage. Refer to " BRAKE BURNISHING PROCEDURE "
- Fit toggle lever and adjusting lever to brake shoe with retainer ring.
- Apply brake grease to the contact areas shown.
- Shorten adjuster by rotating it.
- Pay attention to direction of adjuster.
WHEEL AND SCREW THREADWheel Screw Left Left-hand thread Right Right-hand thread - Connect parking brake cable to toggle lever.
- Install all parts.CAUTION: Be careful not to damage wheel cylinder piston boots.
- Check that all parts are installed properly.CAUTION: Pay attention to direction of adjuster assembly.
- Install brake drum.
- When installing new wheel cylinder or overhauling wheel cylinder, bleed air from brake system. Refer to "BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM ".
- Adjust parking brake. Refer to "ADJUSTMENT ".
- Install wheel and tire. Refer to "TIRE ROTATION ".
