Transaxle Assembly: Assembly
- Install reduction pinion gear bearing outer
to transaxle case using drift (A) (commercial service tool).
CAUTION: Check that bearing outer race firmly sits on the bottom surface. - Install O-rings
to band servo piston retainer
.
- Install stem
and washer
to band servo piston
.
- Firmly set snap ring
using suitable tool and install D-ring
to band servo piston.
- Install servo spring
, band servo piston
, and band servo piston retainer
.
- Align the rib on band servo piston retainer upward.CAUTION: The rib shall be assembled within 25 deg. vertical direction.
- Press band servo piston retainer
using puller (A) (SST: ST33051001) and install snap ring of band servo piston retainer.
- Insert current anchor end bolt
to transaxle case by loosing and tightening repeatedly in order to remove seal sticking transaxle case bolt hole. After that, insert new anchor end bolt.
CAUTION: Vacuum debris peeled off. - Install D-rings
to low & reverse brake piston.
- Install low & reverse brake piston
.
CAUTION: Never incline low & reverse brake piston. - Install spring retainer assembly
.
- Install snap ring
using clutch spring compressor (A) (SST: KV31102400).
CAUTION:- Measure the thickness of snap ring and it must be 1.6 +/- 0.05 mm (0.063 +/- 0.002 in.)
- Check snap ring being installed in the groove firmly.
- Install dish plate, driven plates, drive plates, and retaining plates of low & reverse brake.CAUTION: Be careful with the order and direction of plates.

- Install snap ring
.
CAUTION: Check snap ring being installed in the groove firmly. - Apply compressed air into the oil hole (
), move low & reverse brake piston and engage clutch. After that, stop air and measure clearance (A) between plate and snap ring.
NOTE: Place retaining plate () and push it by hand temporarily while air blowing to avoid air leak.
- Select snap ring to make clearance (A) suitable value if it is below standard value.

: Refer to Low & Reverse Brake .
- Hold center portion
of front planetary carrier and by rotating it counter clockwise install low one way clutch
and planetary gear pack assembly
.
CAUTION: Install them until groove of snap ring can be seen. - Install snap ring
.
CAUTION:- Measure the thickness of snap ring and it must be 1.6 +/- 0.05 mm (0.063 +/- 0.002 in).
- Check snap ring being installed in the groove firmly.
- Install needle bearing
to front planetary carrier.
- Install front sun gear
.
- Install needle bearing
to front sun gear.
- Install high clutch hub
.
- Install needle bearing
to high clutch hub.
- Install seal rings
to high clutch assembly
.
- Install high clutch assembly
.
- Install needle bearing
to high clutch assembly.
- Install reverse clutch assembly
.
- Measure total end play by order written below and select thrust washer.CAUTION: Measure more than 2 positions and use average value.
- Measure L1; from matching surface to top of side cover.
- Measure L2; from top to inner surface of side cover.
- Calculate dimension (a) by following formula: a = L1 - L2
- Measure dimension (b), from lowest inner top surface of reverse clutch assembly onto surface of bearing.
- Calculate thrust washer thickness by following formula and select thrust washer.
Thrust washer thickness = a - b - 0.275 mm (0.0108 in)
- Measure L1; from matching surface to top of side cover.
- Install thrust washer
to side cover

- Install accumulator return springs
and accumulator pistons
.
- Install O-rings
.
- Install 2-4 brake band
.
- Tighten anchor end bolt
by hand until it touches 2-4 brake band.
: Anchor end bolt lock nut
- Install seal rings
to side cover
.
- Apply recommended sealant [Anaerobic Liquid Gasket (Loctite 5460) or equivalent.] to surface of side cover matching to transaxle case (center portion of inside.)
L1
: 3 - 5 mm (0.12 - 0.20 in)
L2
: 2.3 mm (0.08 in)
CAUTION:- Completely remove all moisture, oil and old sealant, etc. from the transaxle case and side cover mounting surfaces.
- Start and end applying at middle of bolts.
- Install side cover
to transaxle case and tighten bolts (
) to the specified torque in numerical order shown in the figure after temporarily tightening them.
- Tighten anchor end bolt
to the specified torque.
Torque force
: 4.9 N.m (0.5 kg-m, 43 ft-lb)
- Tighten anchor end bolt lock nut
by hand until it touches transaxle case.
- Fix anchor end bolt lock nut and loosen anchor end bolt by rotating 2.5 rounds.
- Tighten anchor end bolt lock nut to the specified torque.
- Install reduction pinion gear assembly
.
- Measure tightening dimension of reduction pinion gear assembly in order written below and select shim.CAUTION:
- Apply ATF to bearing making its surface smooth when measuring.
- Measure more than 2 portions and use average value.
- Install parking pawl shaft
.
- Install parking pawl
.
- Install return spring
.
CAUTION: Check that parking pawl can be returned by spring force. - Install parking pawl shaft spacer
.
- Install low clutch hub
.
- Install thrust washer
to low clutch hub.
- Install low clutch assembly
.
- Measure total end play by following formula and select bearing.CAUTION: Measure more than 2 portions and use average value.
- Install selected needle bearing
to low clutch assembly.
- Install baffle plate
and oil pump assembly
and tighten bolts (
) to the specified torque.
*: Tighten with baffle plate
- Install final drive assembly to convertor housing temporarily.
- Calculate tightening dimension of final drive assembly by following order and select shim.CAUTION:
- Apply ATF to bearing making its surface smooth when measuring.
- Measure more than 2 portions and use average value.
- Remove final drive assembly from convertor housing and Install final drive assembly
to transaxle case.
- Install selected differential side bearing adjust shim
to convertor housing. Refer to Final Drive when selecting differential side bearing adjust shim.
- Install selected reduction pinion gear bearing adjust shim
to convertor housing. Refer to Reduction Pinion Gear when selecting reduction pinion gear bearing adjust shim.
- Install reduction pinion gear bearing outer
to convertor housing using drift (A) (commercial service tool).
CAUTION: Check that bearing outer race firmly sits on shim. - Install breather pipe
and dowel pin
to convertor housing
.

: 21 +/- 0.5 mm (0.83 +/- 0.02 in)
Length (B)
: 9 +/- 0.5 mm (0.35 +/- 0.02 in)
- Install baffle plate
to convertor housing.
- Apply recommended sealant [Anaerobic Liquid Gasket (Loctite 5460) or equivalent.] to surface of convertor hosing matching to transaxle case (center portion of inside) and Install convertor housing to transaxle case.

: 2.3 mm (0.08 in)
CAUTION:- Completely remove all moisture, oil and old sealant, etc. from the transaxle case and side cover mounting surfaces.
- Start and end applying at middle of bolts.
- Tighten convertor housing bolts

to the specified torque in numerical order shown in the figure. (Tighten twice bolts 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 13 and 19.)

) to the specified torque in the order shown.

to oil pan and tighten it to the specified torque.
- Install drain plug gasket
to drain plug

- Tighten drain plug
to the specified torque.
- Install snap ring
to terminal assembly.
- Install differential side oil seal to transaxle case and converter housing according to the following procedures.
- Measure lip height (A) and determine differential side oil seal insertion reference value (B) from the list to calculate lip protrusion (C).

CAUTION:- Never reuse differential side oil seal.
- Put a mark on the measurement area and measure height of seal lip at four points diagonally using suitable tool.
NOTE: Since seal lips have a tolerance of +/- 0.3 mm (+/- 0.012 in) at maximum due to manufacturing tolerances or packing conditions, it is necessary to measure the seal lip height beforehand to clarify the tolerance. - As an indicator of the parallelism and insertion depth, cut a piece of tape
to specified width [add 1 mm (0.04 in) to the value calculated from the tip of differential side oil seal lip] and affix to the differential side oil seal.
- Install the differential side oil seal using a suitable tool according to the guide of the tape.CAUTION:
- If differential side oil seal is inserted deeper than the reference value, use a new differential side oil seal and perform the steps again.
- Apply ATF to the differential side oil seal lip and around the oil seal.
- Remove tape.
- Adjust as instructed below to optimize the protrusion size and parallelism.CAUTION: If differential side oil seal is inserted deeper than the reference value, use a new differential side oil seal and perform the steps again.
- Protrusion size (A)CAUTION: Protrusion must fall within +/- 0.5mm (+/- 0.020 in) of calculated size.
- Parallelism at four diagonal points (

CAUTION: The difference among four diagonal points must be within 0.3 mm (0.012 in).NOTE: If differential side oil seal is uneven while installing, tilt suitable tool.

- Check that the protrusion size and parallelism are adequate.
- Measure lip height (A) and determine differential side oil seal insertion reference value (B) from the list to calculate lip protrusion (C).
- Install O-ring
to output speed sensor.
- Install output speed sensor
to transaxle.
- Install air breather cap
to transaxle.
- Install transmission range switch
to transaxle and temporarily tightening transmission range switch mounting bolts
.
- Install manual lever
to manual shaft.
- Move manual lever to "N" position.
- Remove manual lever from manual shaft.
- Assemble the unified transmission range switch adjuster (SST: KV381099S0) as shown in the figure.

- Set the unified transmission range switch adjuster (A) (SST: KV381099S0) to manual shaft and insert the pin
to hole
of transmission range switch.
- Tighten transmission range switch mounting bolts
to the specified torque.
- Remove the unified transmission range switch adjuster (SST: KV381099S0).
- Install manual lever
and lock washer
to manual shaft and tighten manual lever mounting nut
to the specified torque.
CAUTION: Fix manual lever to avoid its rotation when it is torqued. - Install O-ring
to input shaft.
- Pour ATF into torque converter.CAUTION:
- Approximately 1 liter (7/8 Imp pt) of ATF is required for a new torque converter.
- When reusing old torque converter, add the same amount of ATF as was drained.
- Install torque convertor
to transaxle.
- Measure dimension (A), from convertor housing to torque convertor and confirm it is in indicated dimension.CAUTION: Measure more than 2 positions and use average value.
