Disabling System
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1998 Pontiac Grand Am, 1998 Oldsmobile Achieva, and 1998 Buick Skylark. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
SDM maintains sufficient voltage to cause air bag deployment for up to 10 minutes after ignition switch is turned OFF, battery is disconnected, or fuse powering SDM is removed. In order to begin servicing immediately, inflator modules must be removed from deployment loop.
NOTE:
When AIR BAG fuse is removed and ignition switch is in RUN position, AIR BAG warning light will be on. This does not indicate a system malfunction.
- Turn steering wheel to place vehicle wheels in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position and remove key.
- Remove AIR BAG fuse (10 amp) from instrument panel fuse block. Remove left and right-side sound insulator panels. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clip and disconnect driver-side Yellow 2-pin connector at base of steering column. See Fig 1 . Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clip and disconnect passenger-side Yellow 2-pin connector located under right side of instrument panel. See Fig 2 . System is now disabled.
